Big migration today!

Recommended Posts

Tons of ducks on the move in the south metro today! Must have seen 1000's and 1000's of ducks on my way to work! One flock honestly looked like black birds there were so many of them! Mostly mallards but divers also. I called my father and told him. He calle back saying he's been seeing HUGE flocks fly over the house.

Also had some buddies that were late goose hunting on the mississipi and they said a major migration in mid dec. They said they've never seen that many divers in there life. All day flock after flock would land outside there decoys, then all at once they would get up fly south again. Then another flock would start the gathering all over, then they all got up at once and continued on. This happened all day!

Wish we could hunt ducks into dec!

I talked to my cousin today and asked him if he saw the ducks today. He told me you should have seen them last night. They had the whole family out in the yard watching flock after flock after flock of mallards fly over the house. He said it was incredible!

What are you talking about there is no big push of ducks near freeze up. After the 1st week or two of duck hunting all the ducks in Minnesota are gone. Just kidding guys but the weird thing is That's what some people think. I would love to see that many birds. What I would like to know is if those birds were staying here in MN or if they were just passing by.

They were not local birds. I drive over the Mississippi in the south metro everyday to go to work and I see local birds all the time sittin in ponds along the river that don't freeze. I have no idea where these birds were migrating from. Many birds and expecially mallards will stick around until there is no food for them. They can always find a drink in an open river or stream. With the lack of snow this year Im sure they had plenty of food. It was an incredible site yest. The most birds I've seen in one day all year and it's almost January!

Just saw about 1000 migrating mallards in about 5 mins. Spotted them out the window while eating dinner. Stepped outside and there are huge flocks migrating very high and heading south. It was a low flock that flew right over the house and u could pick out the hen and drakes through the window that made me step outside to see if it was happening again and it is! If u live in the south metro near the river u should step outside and see this! Flock after flock migrating! Not nearly as many as the other day but still amazing to see!

Wow!!! I take that back! Just as many if not more as the other day! I stepped back outside, flocks anywhere from 100-500 and u can see like 3-5 of these huge flocks at a time! They don't stop coming! Flock after flock after flock after flock! Incredible!!! 1000's and 1000's and 10's of 1000's of mallards! Just amazing! Wish I was out in the blind!

Are any states still open for duck hunting? Or when does it close nationwide?

Also there are pages and pages of guides on the Web you just gotta search one out for the area you want to hunt,

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
