fishyspringer
I have been looking at the kindle. One thing I haven been wondering if there is anyway to link it to some form of external storage such as a Wifi Hard drive? Does anyone know if this is possible? Sure would be nice for when there is no wifi such as a trip to lake of the woods. Thanks for your help

Jim Almquist
It has 8GB of memory and a 1 Hi-Speed USB - 5 pin Micro-USB Type B Interface that I would bet you could connect to a external hard drive.
CAMAN
You can't just connect an external hard-drive to the Kindle Fire and move items back and forth between them. But you are able to connect a computer between the two and drag and drop items back and forth. From what I have heard Ice Cream Sandwich/Android 4.0 is the first to be able to connect directly to an external hard drive and send/receive through it as long as your device is capable of it. Haven't tried it yet, it's just what I have read.

Probably need an app made by the Hard drive manufacturer to get it to work, but it should work.
Jim Almquist
Caman, Thanks for the heads up. The wife has asked about one and I have done a little searching but would really like to hold one and see for myself what it operates like. She would just be using it for reading books as well as looking at FB and junk like that.
MN Mike
She would just be using it for reading books as well as looking at FB and junk like that. I think that would suit her to a T, my Sister In Law got one for Christmas and that's what she mostly plans on doing with it too..... when the kids are not using it The Fire feels like a well built device and very responsive, I tried it out for a little bit. You can find them at Walmart, Sams and other stores if you want to run out and see what it's like. Mike
Jim Almquist
Thanks Mike! Never thought of looking at Wally World but I guess its not my first choice for electronics I owe the wife something for graduating and getting her RN license and this seems like the perfect gift. MN Mike
Yeah, it's not the first place I run to either but since it's the same device you get online and pretty much the same price...... what the heck! AND you get to run it and check it out in person, that's the plus.Good luck!Mike
nofishfisherman
If you want it mainly as an e-reader then make sure you check them out in person before buying. I've heard they are not very good e-readers since they are back light like ipads. I had a friend you bought one and returned it within a week because it was so hard to read. For apps and other media types she said it was great but it was just a lousy reader
upnorth
I did some looking at the Kindle Fire and from what I could find there is no consideration for external storage, at least any kind of SD card. It was not clear if the micro USB could be used for external storage or not, just that is could be charged that way.
Born2Fish
And I think as far as a reader goes, it works quite well. I have begun 2 books with it, and there are no problems reading it at all. Plus it seems to run this HSOforum quite well.
delcecchi
We now have a regular 79 dollar gen2 kindle and a fire. For reading books, the regular kindle is better. It is lighter and battery lasts for weeks. For watching media and surfing and stuff, fire is far superior since it is color and backlit and the display is high speed compared to e-ink. Fire is really intended for use on a network, although you can download movies and other stuff to it. 8G of books and jpgs is a lot. 8G of movies and music isn't. But if everything is on the cloud most of the time...
spearchucker
There is no provision for extra storage. They expect you to use their cloud service. I also believe that only a small portion of the internal 8GB is available for user storage (something like a GB or 2).Nook Tablet or Color has Micro SD card storage capabilities. I know 3 people with the Nook Tablet and Color and they love them.

Leaving you with 6.5GB available for apps, movies, etc. The Android 2.3 OS doesn't allow for external storage or have power to the micro USB port. It also says it does not support USB host mode, which would be required for any add-on software to support a USB drive.
fishyspringer
I decided to get a Kindle Fire. Havent had a chance to play around with it yet. Seagate has a wireless hard drive that you can connect to through a web browser. Would you be able to connect through the browser on the kindle and then download the content you need from the hard drive?
