Mille Lacs Rescue 12/21/11

This seems to be a repeating topic. Why don't people just stay away until its safe? There is plenty of smaller lakes that are much safer. Not to mention others have to risk their safety in order to rescue those that aren't patient enough.

Common sense isn't that common anymore.

As many as 20 anglers were reported stranded Wednesday night on a large floating ice chunk on Mille Lacs Lake with three area fire departments involved in their rescue.

The anglers were reported stranded after 7 p.m. on the north end of the lake by the Red Door Resort. It was unclear how many anglers were stranded because of night visibility restrictions and the size of the ice chunk. The Minnesota State Patrol was believed to be sending a helicopter to determine how many people were trapped on the ice.

“As they take people off, more show up,” said Brainerd Fire Chief Kevin Stunek.

Aitkin County Sheriff Scott Turner said he planned to wait until Thursday morning to issue a statement and that he could not confirm the number of anglers stranded on the ice. Brainerd, Garrison and Aitkin firefighters were at the scene using a Hovercraft and rescue sleds to get the anglers to safety. No one was reported in the water and the people were not in immediate danger, Stunek said.

However, rescuing that many people was expected to be time consuming with one or two of the stranded anglers fitting in the Hovercraft for each trip to shore. “Stay off the ice, that’s just a huge thing,” Stunek said of the message on ice safety. Early cold temperatures this season without snow made for laudable ice on area lakes, but temperatures rose to 50 degrees in Brainerd Sunday and have remained unseasonably mild.

“The ice is not safe,” Stunek said.

hope some ppl learn b4 starts turning tragic.....maybe ban fishing there till ice is much safer or only allow specific locations on lake to be used

Sure, let's pile more rules on our nanny state. To each his own I say.

I was out there last Friday. And, the fish were biting, and biting well. Even Tony Roach was fishing in our area. However, the next day my bud who stayed overnight in his shack was given a good dose of reality when a large boom occurred and the water came up out of the holes and into the floor of his shack. I would love to get back up there again, but I think where we were fishing is probably unsafe now.

Seems a bit harsh, no doubt ALL of us have "hosed things up" on occasion.

Responders, rescue personnel are much appreciated, and as you are probably aware, are responsible for their safety first. If you don't believe its safe on the ice, don't go, I doubt anyone will drag you out there.

Fortunately we do not need your permission, we are all responsible for our decisions, good, bad, or somewhere in between. Celebrating the fact all are safe this holiday season, I believe is greater than "what if". Its Christmas, lets all be grateful.

We see this happen on Lake Superior a lot.

Before you know it a crack between you and shore gets wider and wider while you slowly drift out into open water. Depending on the size ice chunk you may or may not be in immediate danger.

true, even in the duluth/ superior bay it happans.

yes, i apologize, my last post was rude

....to hose things up once in a while can be completely accidental

....to knowingly do something when conditions are perfect for something horrible to happen expect professionals to bail you out is a bit self centered, but what do i care, im not going in those conditions & obviously others are more concerned bout a few fish more than their own safety, i dont wish ill will on them, just dont think its very bright move. stay safe and good luck on the ice all!

I sure would have to look over the situation for a long time before I decided to get rescued out there....in that I mean I would have looked for every way possible to get off and then I would still pop holes and fish till the next morning to see if conditions changed before I left my gear and paid to get off the sheet of ice....in fact I probably would try to make my house into a boat and paddle across the gap before I left my stuff. Obviously I was not out there but I know the lake and have seen the images and I would think with a long maybe very long walk one would think they would find a way off the lake.

Is That " Really " What You Would Do While You Are In A Panic .. Or Hyperventilating .. Or Mind Racing Full Of Un- Certainty .. How Do You Know Exactly How You Would React .. Stick Together In Group For Support .. And Calmness .. That Would Be The First ..

I hope the $400 a piece covers all of the expense! So the rest of us aren't paying for others poor decisions. Once or twice happens but anyone who fishes on Mille Lacs has heard about what has been happening up there!

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
