hi just wondering who does and who doesnt. i like pike but i find freezing fingers and setting tip ups out gets cold fast and messing with cold water in the minnow bucket. i might quit this year just seeing if most of you like to feel the bite on a rod and reel or like tip ups too thanks

I personally don't own one . I usually have a jig stick in my hand and a deadstick in a holder in the shack. A lot of times I only fish one rod . Just personal preference. I would like to try and fish bass using tip ups in the future though. heard its a lot of fun.

The only thing better than the flag flying is the orange stick on the Polar Pop-up. In SD, we use four lines for ice fishing. There's nothing better than setting out a "spread" and waiting for the pop-ups to start popping. The beauty of fishing that way is you can just start jigging if you miss the fish on the pop-up--a regular occurrence until you get "the touch." grin

Ice fished over Thanksgiving in SD--believe it or not--and caught most of my walleyes and two perch on pop-ups. Can't wait to head back in a couple of weeks.

Yep...four lines in SD. Jigging line, deadstick, and a couple tip-ups. Or, when targeting pike, three tip-ups and a jigging line.

I use tip ups for 3 things. If im in a big northern area ill throw one out just for fun. If a few of us are fishing without a shelter for walleye ill drill holes from shallow to deep and we'll throw tip ups every third hole or so while your walkin around jiggin the rest. It gives a good idea what depth there in and its fun to watch em work into shallower water as night falls. Third if im in a sleeper i set one up in the house at night so the flag hits the wall to wake me up. If nothin else its a good alarm clock to let you know its fishin time in the am.

Love tip up fishing, but have been running a bait runner reel setup that is much more convenient...just gotta get a bell for it or something, or just watch for the rod jumping a little.

Bait runner reels allow the line to go out without having the bail tripped. One turn of the handle engages the drag and you are ready to fight the fish as normal. Okuma makes a couple of these reels that are reasonably priced. I use the same reel in the summer for bank fishing rivers, so it does double duty.
