Ive been due for an upgrade for quit some time now on my cell phone as I just have a basic older one but just cant decide on which phone to get. I used to be all about Iphone's but just not sure about it. I do not own a mac computer which not sure if thats a big deal. I was reading and sounds like if you jailbrake an Iphone you can unlock some pretty nice stuff.... free mobile hotspot etc. But just not sure which way to do does anyone have any suggestions.... what you like or dislike about Iphones or whats your current Verizon phone that you enjoy the features about....

It will all come down to which phone you are more comfortable with using. This means going into a store or grabbing your friends' phones and playing with them for a while. In general, if you are thinking of jailbreaking an iPhone to open up more capabilities, Android would probably be a smarter choice. You can often accomplish the same things without voiding the phone's warranty. Apple also does have a history of turning jailbroken phones into bricks with some of their updates.

Something to remember, new hardware is coming to Verizon sometime in October (HTC Vigor and iPhone 5/4S). If you can hold off for about 2 more weeks, you will get better hardware than you can get today. While most will tell you this is always true; I would expect those gadgets to be the best of the best for almost a full calendar year. The Vigor will likely be branded as a Droid Incredible HD or something along those lines.

Thanks for the reply I was thinking kind of what you just mentioned about the jailbraking that the droid might be a better fit for me. My main concern is the hotspot and im a cheap a$$ and dont really want to spend the extra $$ on it on top of the data and phone package. That HTC Vigor looks like something I might like I am about the look and feel of the phone just as much as it works. But if it looks like what it does when I googled it that looks like a nice phone.

Other than the guys on here, everyone else I know has had nothing but issues with the Droid phones (constantly restarts/reboots itself). I'm not familiar with the phones myself. I only hear the complaints about having to replace them after a week.

My wife had an HTC Incredible that would constantly reboot / restart. We would have to do a battery pull.

Now we both have Droid X2 and have no complaints other than the headphone jack has issues periodically, but have found that we can take a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol and clean the ocntacts from the grime and dust that builds up from lawn work and clear it up.

I look at it this way.

Android = open source.

Apple = not.

Sorry b2K, but that would be wrong. Google: Opensource and Apple. wink Apple's OS X is based from opensource and some of the best software going on OS X is opensource.

Here is a link if you would like to start iOS developing:

opensource.apple.com/release/ios-40

Android and iOS mobile phone owner. Best advise is to look at both. wink It is a toss up for me.

Remember one thing about apps, about 3/4ths of all Droid Apps are free, about 3/4ths of all Iphones cost money. To me, that alone makes the Droid the better choice. You pay so much for these phones, Apples making a killing on apps/songs/movies out of the itunes store, its ludicrous.

I read somewhere, and Lmit may correct me on this, but I think it was 4:1 apps in favor of Apple, and within a year the experts figure that will flip and be 4:1 number of Droid apps to Apple. does that sound right? Might have been 2 years, can't remember

Can't say I've heard that prediction but with the growth of the Android OS it wouldn't surprise me at all. Even with Apple expanding to Verizon and soon Sprint, it is still falling behind in overall sales. Yes, there are many different Android devices compared to the one that Apple has, but it says quite a bit that people are choosing one OS over another.

You are right on about the cost of Apps and one of the reasons why I ditched the iPad2 in favor for an Android tablet. Apple apps are generally very well put together, but it seems like it's tough to find anything that is free compared to Android which has nice apps as well but typically cost less or nothing at all.

I bought the IP4 a month or so ago( as usual it was about 2 days before they announced the I5 would soon be available).

I don't really have any complaints about the phone and I am not really big into apps. ( Got navionics) but I need the phone for email and I also hooked it up as a mobile hotspot so I can run my laptop anywhere and get internet service.

I think they made the screen way to small compared to my old Samsung OmniaII but it certainly has a better interface than the Windows Phone 6 that I had.

Looks like Apple stiffed everyone on the iPhone5 in their announcement today and just revealed a polished up iPhone4 instead, but now the iPhone is an option for Sprint customers.

+ 1 What a let down. Android can now forge ahead with cooler phones while the iphone folks wait for another year.

Do you have to pay extra to use the device as a hotspot or is that a jailbreak thing?

I wish it was a jailbreak thing. You have to pay extra and then only get 2gb of data for the base price which I am evaluating to see how much I will use for the day to day business usage.

I can do lots of the email and some web work off of the phone and that is unlimited but obviously that is limiting with the small screen and touch screen keyboard.

PurpleFloyd, Now i heard if you Jailbreak the Iphone4 you would get the mobile hotspot for free. There are some down sides of this like voiding a Apple warenty but I have also heard its very easy to uninstall it and people wouldnt even ever know you Jailbreaked it. My Fiance' has the Palm for verizon which has this mobile hotspot for free and always has been and always will be on that phone. But then again there is not the nice apps like Android or Apple has.....

There have been some disguised apps within the Apple Store that Jail-break your phone for you.

Jail breaking even the latest iPhone is very easy and simple to accomplish. Ironically to install the latest Beta iOS, you have to pretty much "jail-break" your phone in order to do so. It comes as install and not an update. First rule of install is to 7-Zip the install down for the .msi. laugh For me I have found it to be way easier while using Windows to just do a full ROM backup follow the Jail-Break road during the install.

Linux, you have root and ROM access the minute you plug the phone in. wink I do not even think you have to make a visit to the repository for additional tools.

After iOS Beta 6's release, iOS went the way of supporting any future updates over WiFi. As far as what I have heard, this feature is continuing into the stable release. The later Beta versions of iOS4 had this but it never made it to stable.

Jumping from Apple to Android, Windows or Linux is in my opinion just keeping your options and mind open. Limiting yourself to one is placing all your eggs in one basket, hoping for the best.

Android/Google is the liberal answer to Windows and Apple Conservative approach. Stallman pretty much started open source and expanded it. He explains himself pretty well in this video. Funny thing though is he started the "Apple Hate", yet in this video calls out for "togetherness"/walls being built:

"> " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350">

Stallman is the "Black Sheep" in the circle of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, but created Linux so he is the same IMO. I respect and agree with him on pretty much everything. Where I disagree with him is when it comes to something someone creates and someone else takes it and makes millions when the creator makes nothing. Also security and making money. If everything is free, then this is all just a big hobby.

Mobile wise, if someone from in here was to create an Android app that totally changed what apps have become today, someone can take that s-code and make money with it before the developer can bring it to market. Where is the incentive for developers other than it being a hobby? First thing people would say is "I would protect it", well than you are just as bad as Apple.
