Deer and Dollars

Recommended Posts

Basically computers, office management, bit of everything, smaller company. Mine fortunately broke towards the end of the day on a Saturday, so no vacation day wasted. I live close enough to any place I do tractor work, that I'm way too stubborn to use a vacation day for that stuff. If I'm on vacation I'm actually hunting or actually fishing. Except when my wife manages to get me to go somewhere unrelated to that like Disney World (once)...

I spend as little as possible. While I'm out there for the love of it, I'm also trying to put meat in the freezer. The more I spend, the less practical it is.

Amen to that! Meat hunter here, too. I bought three tags this year ($60), and traded some old boxes of shotgun shells for three boxes of rifle ammo (basically free, since I'm pretty sure I got the shotgun shells from an old college buddy) that should last me for 10 years or so.

Factor in the cost of gas (most spendy part, guessing $150) and two nights at a hotel ($65 total) and I'm right around the $275-$300 for deer hunting. Now, assuming I tag out on opener (HA!) and don't come up with any unexpected costs, and because I process all my own venison -- factoring in that I get roughly 50-75 pounds of meet off a deer (multiply by 3 and divide by $275-$300) that means, it costs me about $1.22-$2 per pound. Waaaay less than beef!

But who's counting? whistle

When it comes to spending on clothing accessories. WOW its seems every year it is more expensive than the last. Was at a store the other night and they wanted like $240 for a jacket, and $200 something for the pants. Not going to pay that much. Like others have said it should be more for the love of it, and not to pay for it. It is a privledge to hunt...Now if I can just find a way to talk others out of hunting, so I can see more deer'''''mmm?
