Recommended Posts

hi i just got a 94 chevy 1500 w/t 4.3 v-6 2 wheel drive truck. 253000 miles. runs good new tires, brakes, heater core and exhaust. paid $500 for it body is fair however the windshield is busted bad i hoped to use it for fishing and towing a small boat. my nephew had it for 2 years with busted windshied the day i bought it mr. cop pulled me over for it. now i have a fix it ticket a new one is $250 the junk yard is $100 but $150 to install. every where i call says its cheaper to buy new. so i know the decision is mine but would you put this kind of money in this truck are they known to last long i believe i only have 30 days to fix it after that i cant use it thanks

I would fix the windshield and drive it. You said it has new parts and runs well. It will probably last a long time. You already invested 500 bucks into it. Drop another 250 and enjoy your fishign rig.

So you bought it knowing that you where going to break the law by driving it with a broken windshield and now your upset because you have to fix it?

I'm sorry I don't get it. Why is that different than the guy that gets busted with an overlimit of fish, or talking a dear out of season?

While I agree that one knows what they are getting into when they run a vehicle with a busted windshield (the possibility of being ticketed), I can hardly agree that parallels can be drawn between that and taking too many fish or shooting deer out of season! The guy wants advice on his windshield, not a lecture from your soapbox...

To that end, I say cough up the $250 if you can swing it and drive that thing into the ground.

Remember, this is an aged truck with a small engine and two wheel drive.

I can sorta see the "drive it till it dies" rationale but keep in mine that it might die.....and I mean DIE....right in the middle of serious traffic or a need-to-do job.

Give it to somebody and go get a decent four wheel drive truck.

And yeah, it was not wise to drive it with broken windshield but what the $%^^$$^ fella's we have all done unwise things. But DON'T whine too loudly when you get busted for it. Take the hit-pay the man.

No the guy bought a truck with a broken windshield knowing full well that it was against the law to drive it that way and is know upset that it costs to much to replace the windshield after he got busted! If he hadn't been busted he would have driven it until the wheels fell off with the broken windshield.

Laws are laws! Why is it "o.k." to break some and not others. The windshield should have been replaced upon purchase or replaced by the previous owner as part of the purchase. If your not going to follow the rules than don't drive it, hunt it, or fish it! I see no difference in a broken law. Whether it be speeding, driving without insurance, expired tabs, fishing without a license. We are all big boys and should except the consequences when we get caught breaking those laws!!

And lastly when you post something like that on an open online forum people are going to have opinions about the matter. If I want to get on a soap box and express my opinions than I am free to do that just as you are to give your opinion that "The guy wants advice on his windshield, not a lecture from your soapbox..."

i dont appreciate being called a poacher. i only wanted to drive the truck for a week or two to see if it was worth driving. i bought it with the intention of fixing the windshield if the truck seemed to drive good i didnt want to put a $250 windshield in it so i could just junk it in a week. i was hopeing for just advice on are these a good truck. i hear some people get 300,000 miles out of them. i bought a o2 town and country van and basically was told i'm a nimrod for buying it to tow the boat. funny i see more caravans towing now than i see gas guzzling suvs and trucks because no one can afford them. yes it was my fault i got caught with the busted windshield and i paid the price i'm a man and will own up to it. i wonder how many people drive with bald tires. are they poachers to

airjer, thanks i believe i know what you are saying here. windshield to be put in tomorrow. i believe you tell it like it is. thanks for the comments all

Maybe either do a thorough check over yourself, or bring it in to have it checked out before spending money on it? Unless something drastic is found, I think you will get your moneys worth out of it and then some, with no problems at all.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
