What garage heater???

B-man715

Question

Was looking for some opinions on a garage heater.

My garage is insulated, 650 sq ft, 8' ceilings. Plumbing, power, and vent (vertical) are set up for a hanging natural gas heater.

Any recommendations for brand and btu's?

What's a rough estimate in the cost of keeping it 50 degrees for a month? (insulation is 6" walls, 8" ceiling, 2" doors)

This has been asked many times. I remember some concerns about parts for some of the more popular models but I can't remember specifics. I know that when I looked at a lower end rig the price impressed me until I saw that there was a pretty expensive kit that also had to be purchased. Again I can't remember details. If you spent some time looking at stuff from last August through November you may find the info. Lots of "I love my ...." but some guys who work on the stuff gave some really helpful info. I held off because of what I read about the popular models from FF and M.

We was going to get a "Hot Dog", but our local plumber carries a brand similar, and he said he knew he would be able to get parts if/when needed. The price was about the same.

For size. Go to the web site for the hot dog. There is a chart with recomendations for what size per sq. footage,

We mainly got ours for family get togethers.( small house, big family! grin) So the garage becomes our family room. Works well!

I heat my garage full time. Its a little under 1100 sq.ft with 2 inch insulated doors. I have a Reznor 60,000 BTU output and it handles it no problem and recovers easily if the doors are opened to go in and out.

Although they are spendy, I highly recommend this brand. Mine has never missed a beat, they make a quality product that lasts!

My garage is almost exactly the same volume as yours I'm guessing, including ceiling height, and mine is insulated all around. I have a 35K Modine hung on the ceiling that works very well. I keep it at the minimum in the winter (about 42 or so), and bump it up when needed. I can get it from 42 to t-shirt comfortable in about 15 minutes. It's held comfortably at 75 on days when the temp was at or close to 0 without having to run all the time. There's a slight bump in gas cost I'm sure, but nothing outrageous from what I hear my neighbors are paying without the heated garage.
