new ways to catch gills

What are your ways to catching gills in deeper water, 12-14ft. I have caught them slow trolling leeches. Just seeing what else do people use to catch them.

I have found using small jigging spoons (like ice fishing) tipped with a wax worm or gulp is very effective as they get down quickly and give great action. I remove the treble and add a single hook also. I haven't gone to ice rods but I have gone to 4-5ft ultra light ones that are fun to hook a bull on. You can also slow troll these as they stay down well as you move.

A drop shot rig with a # 10 wooly bugger works well.

(BTW) It is legal to use up to three flies on the rig for gills.

Small cranks or sticks with a split shot or 2 in front.. usually weeds out the runts.

i usally fish them now from 14 to 30 ft in the lake i fish, and using a drop shot with a piece of night crawler or using ice flies and wax worms our some of the gulp red wigglers or some of the varis things they have seems to work good at times fishing over the side of the boat with a ultralite rod. have one 8 footer and a 6 footer. just a ball when you get into the bigger ones.

bobber & jig/twister cast out let it chill for 10-20 secs then reel stop and continue that over and over. They love it!

you need to buy the high speed transom mount transducer and then the rest is the same as if ice fishing. they also make a trolling motor mounted transducer that works with a vex.

Now i have a HB898cSI...No longer necessary to bring a classic flasher along!

drop shot w/ fly fishing flies, as someone above already mentioned, especially if they're over sand, rocks or mud (no snaggy weeds).

Drop shots with flies can be very effective. The movement you can get from marabou on a dropshot rig is insane.

How do you tie the fly to the main line on a drop shot rig? If you used the same knot/method for drop shotting a rubber worm then I would think the fly would look awkward as it would be right on the main lines since it's so small. Do the fish seem to care?
