high speed reel

My wonderful wife bought me a Curado high speed reel for my birthday. Cabelas is clearancing them out because Shimano is coming out with a different housing, same guts. Wondering what applications you use this for and what line? I was thinking of putting this on a 6'6" MH rod with suffix 832 that I have enough of to add to reel. I was thinking of using this for jig/slop conditions, spinners/buzzbaits. Really don't want to buy another rod as I was contemplating of getting a heavy action thinking this may be too stiff.

i use a 7:1 for buzz baits. easy to get em up after the hit the water on the cast. spinners not so much . need a 6.2:1 or slower for that. and for slop the lower speed higher tourque reel is whats best but itll work. should be a fun set up you have there.

Hiya -

I use a high speed reel for anything where I'm mainly working the bait with the rod tip, and taking up slack with the reel, like Texas rigs, Carolina rigs, jigs, football heads, etc.

For spinnerbaits, etc., I do prefer a 6:1 reel, and slower yet for cranks. But, your mileage may vary, and lots of guys use HS reels for both those.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

You could use it for anything except for deep diving cranks, which it would still work but would wear you out. I like them to fish slop and pitch with like craigums. Especially pitching. Then you can wind your lure back to the boat faster. Works great when your fishing docks. Makes it easier to hit every area you want to quickly. either way its a great reel.

Tonka is right. A high speed reel can be used for anything IF you have the ability to slow down. I can't do it. Have to crank with a 4.7:1 slow speed reel. I get excited and reel fast without realizing it! I've also had my partner outfish me with a 3.8:1 gear ratio reel too many times to chalk it up to coincidence.

If you want to get worn out... Try burning a spinnerbait or ripping a lipless crank with a slow reel. That will make you realize how much of a difference there is in retrieve speed.

maybe I'm just a baby then tonka. I used a 7.1 throwing a dt16 last year and my forearm was shot. I now have a 4.7 daiwa that makes it much easier. Your right though. After that classic win by KVD the only bait I fish is a black and chartreuse strike king 1.5. laugh

I bought a Diawa 4.9:1 this year and love it for medium to deep cranks.

mww24, you must the one that has bought all the black and chartreuse KVD 1.5 and 2.5's.

Strike King must be laughing all the way to the bank at the number of those that have been sold since KVD won the Classic.

hey rum. Did you buy a daiwa exceler? the 80 or 90 dollar one? thats what I bought. maybe its a 4.9. I love that reel. I have it in a few different ratios. Great reel for the price.

I love the whole Kevin van dam deal. That guy could say he won the tourney on a tampon and maxi pads would be sold of walmart the next day. It's quite amazing the marketing power one man can have.
