Travis, I use a clinch Knot. 17-20 lb mono keeps it "stiff" so it runs true. Moisten the knot when clinching it tight, prevents heat buildup which can weaken your line. I use a large single bait grabber hook, the barbs on the shaft keep the crawler from slideing down. Then your choice of amounts and colors of beads, interchangeable clevis, bead, then a barrel swivel. The clevis allows for quick blade changes. Hint: Throw a few blue ones in also. I think single hooks keep the bait running true without spinning. Dont worry about hookups, if there chaseing down your harness the single hook will probably be inhaled. can it be luck?

Travis....welcome to the site......i always use a palomar knot....it's the fastest easiest and the strongest fishing knot there is period ((proven with tests)).....clinch knots are good but they take too long and not as strong as the palomar....search the net under fishing knots and it will show you how to tie them......and yes...wet the line before pulling it tight....

Snells are pretty quick with practice. For the top hook in a harness I use a snell knot, but send the tag end down the shank to the end hook, where a palomar works just fine. My .02

I like to use the trilene knot and uni knot. They are both very easy to tye and provide 99% of line strength. The Uni Knot is important to learn if you wish to tye snells.

I do the same as walleyewacker. I tie a snell knot for all of my snell lines. It took me a while to get a hang of it but it payes off in the long run.

The snell knot here too. I tie it by hand but there are snell tools out there that make it even easier and cost very little.

Crawler harnesses are a bit harder to do but with pratice it's not too bad. Although I limit myself to a two hook harness rather than three.

Good Luck!

travis sounds like your having the same troubles I use to, actually I tied several up last night, now i think I'm an expert, HEH!,
kidding, but it got alot easier after awhile.
If its slipping off, then your not holding the wrap tight enough, hold it tight where you wrapped it then pull your lead line, then once your safe, take a pliers and hold the short end of line and the pull your lead line at the same time to make sure its all nice and tight providing the snell knot is the one were talking about here

Bringing this one back to the top.

Getting ready to get my Summer gear in order and need to replace all my empty snell spots. Does anybody know how to describe how to tie a snell knot or know of a site that has illustrations. I have been using palamor knots and 90% of my break-offs are at the top know on crawler set-ups. I think a snell knot would be the ticket. Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

Thanks

Snell your upper hook on the line and leave yourself plenty of extra to tie on your next 1 or 2 hooks. Remember when you pull the line tight you will gain extra length so compansate for that. I have gone away from 3 hook crawler rigs and gone to 2 hooks. On Lake superior I will use a small treble for the last hook on spinner rigs. Especially if pulling plastic worms instead of live bait.

Northlander, how much does putting that treble hook on make a difference? It sounds like a good idea, might have to try that on 1 or 2 rigs that I will re-tie this spring.

Ya its about that time that I will get my snells out from last year and go through them all. I will pretty much will part out the ones with bad line on them and buid new ones again. I also use a snell knot for my snells and I normally only use 2 hooks on my crawler snells.

Travis...if you can, try to find the VHS tape "Steve Fellegy's Mille Lacs School of Walleyes". He shows exactly how to tie and build harnesses. By the way, he uses the snell knot also.
