Boat trailer - sandblasting and painting

If you go down this road, choose the final coating wisely. There is nothing like the baked on factory finish that comes on a trailer. I have applied many different coatings over the years and all were commercial products professionally applied. I suggest you look into a truck bed liner type product if you plan to travel down dirt raods and are worried about rock chips.

Just wonder what it costs to have the trailer sandblasted??? What about the cost of having somebody sandblast, prime, and paint???

waste of time and money. I have been considering the same, but like the above poster said, you can't beat the factory baked-on finish.

That being said, if you did want to do it, grab some farm implement paint and brush it on. That would be your best bang-for-the buck.

Sonic or Mike...just wanting some advice about this topic because I too was thinking of getting a boat trailer sandblasted, primed and painted, but would taking a wire brush and scrapping all the loose paint and other debris off and buying a can of rustoleum paint and just paint that on... would that be the best bang for my buck? I'm not fussy, its just a boat trailer, more worried about the bearings, tires and lights anyways. thanks in advance for your help!

I have periodically did the wire brush and spray paint which updates the trailer for a couple years but it will continue to rust. I have seen and heard that the bedliner coating is a nice way to go and it also adds grip to the surface of the tongue for when your tightrope walking to the winchstand.

A wire brush is next to worthless. Try some 3M rust and paint stripper discs. If you're cheap, use some 36, 80, and/or 180 sandpaper.

Rustoleum paint would be ok.

If your in the market for a new trailer you can check out the galvanized trailers. No rust or repaint to worry about.(Various manufacturers).Otherwise if you do repaint you can have an Enamel based paint baked on like the original which will last longer but will cost more money.Like most things you get what you pay for.c63

I have looked into having my trailer sandblasted and powder coated as well as blasted and painted. Material cost alone for an epoxy type paint is rediculous. Powder coating is more durable(IMO)than paint and the cost isnt much different. The prices I've received run from $200 - $500.

I am looking to get the same thing done.

I have a trailer that has the "road armor" on it that has started to crack and peel. I am finding a fair amount of rust under there.

I have done repairs and used an off the shelf bedliner product, but it doesn't look worth a ****.

Ideally I would like it sandblasted and then painted with a bedliner material.

Anyone know of some places in the metro I could call to get this done?

Also, boat is on the trailer, is that a problem? Or do these shops have a way to get the boat off the trailer?

I switched from white trailers to black 10 years ago and it makes it difficult to see the rust. No more white trailers. If I were going to repaint my trailer I would take it to a LINE X shop and have it coated. I have seen factory trailers with this coating on it and they don't show any rust or chips.

I have a black trailer now, with a similar material to the "bed liner" stuff. The problem with mine is that I don't think it was applied correctly at the factory, and is cracking and peeling in several spots.

I am looking to find a local shop in the metro who can strip and sandblast my trailer, and re-finish it in bed liner like line-x or something.

I was just in South Carolina doing some inshore fishing. There none of the trailers are painted. And none of them were rusty despite being dipped in saltwater on a regular basis. Makes me wonder why I was sold a painted trailer that is starting to rust.

Pretty sure they're all galvanized down there. If they weren't so ugly, and perhaps a bit of overkill I would get that done to mine.

There is a company in Winstead that does hot dip galvanizing of trailers if you want to go that route. You do the cleanup/stripping and bring them the bare frame parts. Might be cheaper in the long run to just buy a new trailer hough.

Most line-x shops are just line-x shops.

So, I think we will both need to find a shop to sandblast and then take it to get line-x'ed. There is a shop in Arden Hills, and another in Hudson WI.

I will let you know what I find. Hopefully we get a couple recommendations from other board members too.

last year when I went to a cabin for the week and had the boat in the water,I bought a quart of Por-15, silver, and painted the trailer right over the rust. I was going to put a white top coat on, but the silver looked so good, I left it as is. Por-15 boasts you can paint right over rust and it will never rust again.

Don't know if I stirred it enough or what, but after a year, the rust is showing thru a little....
