Need a new desktop PC

Recommended Posts

Well, the sky is the limit with choices.

Not sure I want to even ask, because I am sure I will have 50 different opinions, but here it goes...

I dont need anything for gaming or movies. Just general home use "stuff".

PS - I dont need anything but the desktop unit.

Whatcha think is good to go after?

Just about any low end PC would do fine. I would just make sure you get the RAM up to about 4 gig. Dell or HP usually has some deals out there. What you really want it decent service in the event something fails.

Go to the Dell web site and look under Outlet, you'll find great deals. Keep searching after a while, the site gets refreshed every 15 minutes, best unsold deals come back in the listings. Don't just buy one out of the blue, keep going maybe tomorrow, or in a couple of days, or late on in the afternoon, you'll find great savings.

What ive done in the past few years is build your own its easier than it sounds, I have no computer back ground other than watching a few how to Vids on You tube, It saves alot of money doing it this way. Best Thing to do is pick out a Motherboard and go to there web sight and see whats compatable with it..Processer, Ram thenn go from there. Alot of good prices out there On NewEgg gl

Purple is right. Micro Center has all the components if you want to build and they're helpful with hints and tips.

You can also call some of the local Re-marketers here in the cities like World Data. They get ton's of business level machines real cheap and re-sell them.

Add up the cost, including a copy of the operating system. Pretty hard to beat a sale at someplace like dell, Also check discover if you shop through their site there sometimes is a bonus cash back.

I got an I5 with 1T, 6G, etc etc for under 600 from dell via discover. With 3 year service.

Totally agree, you might be able to build a superior PC, with name brand components and eliminate bloatware, but what it is being used for, I would keep an eye on sale prices through Dell, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.

Have you considered a laptop? I purchased a tower PC in addition to my 2 laptops because I though I needed a standalone PC. Boy was I wrong, it's a total dust collector, while my laptop handles all my tasks.

I did consider a laptop.

I have one for work that I can use, but I hate to use it much for personal use, as I got a virus on it one time and had to have it rebuilt by IT.

I have a 22" HD monitor that I use with my current desktop tower. I contemplated a laptop and just hook up a keyboard, mouse and use my HD montitor off a laptop. But I kind of ruled out the laptop and just go with another tower.

If I need to use my work laptop, I am not afraid to use it, I just dont want to use it for everything.

if you do get a laptop you can just get a docking station for that laptop. Then your monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse are always connected to the docking station.

set it on your docking station and you can surf on your monitor, or take it off and relax on the couch reading posts while sipping on your tea. haha

Another option to consider is to get a laptop. You can connect your desktop keyboard and monitor to a laptop so it will work like a desktop but maintain the portability of a laptop. Plus, if you have enough room you can project your monitor over both and have two monitors.

I guess I'm way behind.

While World Data does get some end user stuff, most of the inventory is server level equipment. In my opinion one is better off buying a new PC with Windows 7 for $450 then a 3 year old PC with XP for 200-250.

Dells outlet site is my go-to for cheap PC's.

    • Power output is:  amps x volts = watts   If your charger is pushing 10amp at 12 volt: 12 x 10 = 120 watts.  2 banks = 240 watts.   240 watts / 120v at your outlet = 2 amp.   Efficiency isn't 100% so it's gonna be more than 2 amp on your garage circuit, but maybe like 2.4 amps.     I think.... It's been a while, LOL.  Either way 20amps output on a charger for a 12v battery isn't the same as pulling 20amps off your garage circuit.
    • Wanderer, thank you. I did look at the breakers for my garage/outside outlets and they are 20 amp.  I reached out to the company that makes dual pro chargers with the question and this is the reply I received.:     Thank you for reaching out to us here at PCS. The Sportsman series charger, although rated ay 10 amps per bank, draws only 5 amps from AC when all banks are charging. As the Professional series which provides 15 amps per bank, has a maximum AC draw of 7.5 amps with all banks charging.
    • That’s an interesting point.  While I understand how Amps work, I can’t say I’m fully versed in the draw of modern on board chargers.   By modern code, outdoor and outbuilding outlets should be 20 Amp.  If your outside or garage outlets are 15 Amp, they’re undersized.  But that is quite possible if the garage was built before that code became enforced.   With heavy use, you may not be able to keep up on daily charging without the 10 Amp per channel charger, however that’s with very aggressive use for consecutive days.  On our June muskie trip we run up to 15 hours a day for up to 7 days on a 24V Ulterra and by mid week we’re starting to see the batteries not reach full charge.  That’s a lot of bank running at nearly 2 mph on windy shores.   We charge at a dock with up to 6 boats per dock plugged in - some with 36 volt systems.  Now I’m not sure if all the outlets are on a dedicated circuit but I’m betting they aren’t.  But they’re all 20A outlets with a lot of draw on them.  At max draw, they’re not keeping up but also not tripping the breakers.   What I’m saying, without a technical review is: you’re probably fine either way.  You probably won’t tax your batteries so much that they can’t recover on a 5 Amp per channel overnight charge and a 10Amp per channel charger probably won’t be too much to plug into your 15A outlet - if it really is a 15A.  If you’re sure, you’re sure, but I would double check if you’re not 100%.
