lets see your shoulder mounts!

Yeah, I get my mancave all finished off and next thing you know the rugrats moved in on me. I should really get that one on a plaque and hung up so nobody gets hurt by it. If wife had her way, everything would be in the garage sale or on HSO-Classifieds. She just doesn't get it! But yet she can have her dam baskets all over the house??

I would like to see people start doing more pedestal mounts. I am having my taxidermist do my 2010 buck on an oak fence post pedestal with a rooster on the ground. I feel it gets the hunter more involved in the mounting process. My taxidermist calls and e-mails me with new ideas and pictures. I also do the same. It just turns out more unique than a regualar head mount and it is something that will be more APPRECIATED when it is done. I also think taxidermists feel the same about this, they are getting sick of doing regular head mounts and given the opportunity to do a pedestal they will put more effort into their work. I just never see these pedestal mounts anywhere and am wondering why not? I am guessing its the extra money, the extra space, or it is maybe its just a new thing??? I am a broke college student who makes just over $100 per week and i'm not letting the extra cost stop me one bit from doing my pedestal! how often do you get this opportunity?

First off, welcome to HSO! I'm guessing the number one reason is the extra price associated with the add-ons. Pedestals aren't cheap unless you provide your own and add up quick once you start talking additional animals and habitat. Another reason is floor space. They take up a lot of room and if you have kids crawling around, they're probably not the best idea. I'm doing a wall pedestal for my deer for this reason alone. I agree though, it's amazing what you can do nowadays. I've paged through the McKenzie online catalog several times looking for habitat and different ways to display mounts. Check out taxidermy dot net and you'll see custom mounts from taxidermists from all over the country.

i'm having my 2010 archery buck mounted as a pedestal as well. our "stand" is going to be a rub that came from the core area of the buck! i'm really excited to get it back and add it to our "hunting shack" (ie. a small room in the house dedicated to everything outdoors) smile

I had drift wood done around the edge of my 2009 archery buck and the taxidermist put in the tree I shot with my first shot. He did a LOT of work on the extras but used it as a learning experience. He was going to put a rub on the tree where the arrow was shot but was thinking if he did that it would get too bulky. My other taxidermist I use is playing with that fake rocks stuff and was trying different pedestals with lights actually in it to show off the mount. I don't know what was going to be the center piece but the pedestal was 5 foot I asked him how big his door ways were and he had to tear it apart to make it smaller. He was happy I asked that since he'd have a 1000 dollar mount and cannot get it out of his work space. I saw one that I love at the Gander Mountain in Fargo, ND. It has a pedestal about 3' tall and on one side is the buck on the other side is a chainsaw carving of an indian. I thought that was pretty cool. The edges of the mount on the wood was rope and I thought that was pretty cool. I bet its expensive but by it being solid wood it wouldn't be as top heavy.

from now on it has to have 10 long tines or better, preferably 12.

Don't sell yourself short, there are some giant 8 and 9 pointers out there, I shot a big 7 a while back that was bigger than a 9 and 10 I got.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
