ice house or no ice house

I've spent many days and nights just sitting on a bucket. For my first probably 5-6 years of ice fishing, I would sit there in below zero weather whacking the ice skim off of my hole every five seconds and call the guys sitting in permanents a bunch of pussies. blush

I managed to get my hands on a little, beat up one man flip a few years ago. It was free (result of a nasty breakup I was witness to), otherwise I might still be sitting on a bucket every time out. I really like that little flip these days: definitely warmer, hole doesn't freeze, it's still pretty mobile, NOBODY CAN SEE ME CATCHING FISH WHEN I'M ON A GOOD BITE, I have something to stand behind if nature calls and there's mixed company on the ice, my beer doesn't freeze, and with the ability to get out of the wind and generate some heat it is much safer to go exploring off the beaten path alone (and I have a nice lonely little lake that treats me well when I do). wink

A one man flip can be had really cheaply, and you can sell it pretty easily if you don't like it. Or, give it to another newbie who wishes he or she had one. You really don't have much to lose by trying it out. 2c

I do a little of both, I usually will start by drilling a bunch of holes and jigging around to see what the bite is like if I'm on a new lake. If I find that there is one or two holes that are consistent producers and it's cold/windy then I'll probably set up the portable. If it's a nice day or I have some tip-ups out with a group of people then I usually stay out of the portable. Also, once the sun sets I'm always in a portable of some kind.

Im all for manning up and fishing out in the open especially a hot pannie bite when your hopping all around. But a porty or permanents definitely have their place especially with a family or kids as its nice to be out there and everybody enjoys it because they are not freezing their butt off.

ya know, i have a eskimo quick flip II, but the only thing i use it for is the built in sled to haul all my stuff out on the lake. once im on the lake i pound holes til i run out of gas and hop around all day! thats ice fishin!

Like so many things, it's mostly personal preference. Like many posters have said, being outside with no house can be a wonderful thing. But, a shelter can help extend your (and potential fishing partners') willingness to be out on an otherwise marginal day.

I like having options. Just because you own a portable (and even have it with you) doesn't mean you are required to use it. I don't think you're going to hurt its feelings any...

I agree that a portable offers best of both worlds. I flip the Clam Pro open so as to block the wind, so in essence am still out in the open. Of course I can then flip it closed to hide the bite or warm up. The Eskimo Quick Fish III is also "portable". You set it up and then two guys can get inside and move it anywhere on the lake without breaking it down again.

A flip over portable is the best. Just flip it up into the 1/2 position so you have a nice wind block and your're still sitting outside. At night when it gets colder, the sun has set, and your sick of scraping ice out from your holes, just flip it down and turn on the heater. Best of both worlds. Not to mention you have a sled to haul all your stuff out to the middle of the lake.

I don't like fishing outside unless it is above freezing. I hate it when the wind blows and the fishing line is iced up and blowing around and snagging on stuff. I am getting older and softer and just like fishing in comfort of an enclosed heated fish house.

I hate freezing line and holes, that being said I will tolerate it to a point if it is a nice day. The cold itself does not really bother me. Flipovers have three functions: coverd, wind block, and all open. Nice to have the sled if you are moving around as well.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
