MN Bull Elk Found...

Recommended Posts

curious if it's an official green score or someone who thinks they know how to measure a nt. elk. not that it's that difficult but they could be off by quite a bit if they were un sure of what they were doing with antlers that size.

are minnesota elk, roosevelt or american elk? theres more pictures on a trapperman sight.

wonder if cabelas has called yet.

Hoppe, there is a 50 second video floating around, but I have not been able to get my hands on it as of yet. Nonteep, my understanding is that the bull was measured while in the position of the MN DNR and they informed Ryan of the score upon returning it to him.

did they have an elk season last year?

yes there was an elk season last year, but not in the area that this herd roams, this herd is in the Caribou, MN, area. the hunting zone is west of this area by Lancaster and Orleans. this herd travels back and forth into Manitoba,CA, and i don't know if the canandians have a season in thier area either, so the bulls with this herd are beasts. and for the record, the story that ryan has given in the article is just a little sugar coated and not quite as it really happened. just like on tv, based on a true story but scripted for viewer entertainment.

well, here goes,

a local rancher had seen the herd by the side of the road when going by to do chores, then his neighbor drove by and the the herd had crossed the road and moved on into the woods, all except this bull, it was laying upside down next to the fence, so the rancher walked over to see what was wrong and noticed the animal couldn't get up. it appeared that the bull had stumbled jumping the fence and there it was. so he went down to his neighbors and told him what he had just seen, and they figured if they brought some 2x4's with that maybe they could get the animal up.when they pulled up to the bull to try and free it ryan and his buddies were there then also, so he did help in freeing the bull, but it was the ranchers that were going to try this in the first place, anyway, they got it up and over but the bull was wore down and just layed on the ground at first then he got up and made it into the woods a short distance. they all agreed what a monster bull this was and that it was quite run down and hoped it could make it but that it may not either. word has it that ryan sat there for most of the next two and a half days watching the bull and when it took it's last breath and died, he then called the CO and told him that he had found a dead elk and wanted to claim the rack.one can only wonder why he didn't call the CO or the local vet earlier to see if they could do anything for the bull or stop the suffering then. the CO came and took the elk to check it out and a week later ryan called to see if he could get possession of the rack, but the dnr also had an interest in this monster bull and may want to display it to the people of minn so they wanted to retain possession of it. word has it, this is when ryan said that if they didn't give him the rack he would take them to court and fight for possession of it. now the dnr has had some bad pr in this area the last couple years and they decided that maybe it was best to let it go, so now ryan is in possession of this rack.

so he never mentioned sitting there like a vulture for two and a half days or goin to court to fight for this rack, or that the ranchers had the plan to free it in the first place, or that the local sporting stores had offered over 50k for the rack.

food for thought.

In the article it even says he went back over the next two days to see if it had died no news there, the fact that he was going to take the dnr to court if they didnt give the rack back thats where the [PoorWordUsage] meter goes off for me.

I have no queries with your story. If you know the truth... Then you know. More or less I just think it is amazing animal. Its too bad somebody couldn't give this bull a proper dismise. The way it died is kind of a shame. Thanks for giving your side of the story.

The story I read on field and stream said he hovered over the animal until he died. He technically recovered the animal and asked for a possession tag. I also think its fine if he threatened to sue. He has the legal right and I would argue he has a good case too. So he didn't mention that someone else had the great idea to try and help it. Big deal. He didn't lie about it, he just left it out, or maybe the writer did. The news leaves out details all the time.

The DNR did the right thing. It was an amazing find and this guy followed the rules in order to get the rack. Sounds like he got everything he wanted and if he can't sell it then he's still got an amazing rack and an equally unique story.

sounds like theres some jealousy up in the grand forks area because they didn't get the rack, some people can't be happy for anybody.

here's another tidbit of info for those that were expecting to see it at the deer classic, he didn't bring it because he can only get insurance coverage for 10 grand, they are worth alot more than that and he didn't want to take the risk of them getting stolen or damaged at/to the deer classic.
