hang on stands

Just want to vent a little and wondering how many of you guys out there have had portable stands stolen on public land. I just lost another this past weekend even chained and padlocked to the tree. Finally purchased a summit climber. Any one have sugestions for keeping hang on's where you left them last.

Hiya,

I would say this one is pretty simple... Remove your stand from public land when not using it. In some places, leaving a stand overnight might be legal (many are not legal but people do it anyway), but it also makes it a public stand for anyone to use (and unfortunately, to potentially take). The best safeguard you have for keeping a stand in your possession is to remove it. Saves you the frustration and dollars lost and also does not signal someone to the area you are hunting.

I have been fortunate NOT to have my stand taken on public land where it is legal to keep it out over night. I do lock it up and thats about as safe as one could do except to take it down daily (which I know is a pain). I'm actually going to place out a real nice ladder stand that I modified this year on public land so I'm hoping that we hunters can respect that!

One other option is to take out your climbing sticks or tree pegs also, then if someone feels the need to climb up that tree and cut your lock, well they themselves must be having a pretty 5hitty life anyways!

Yah taking your stands with you can be a pain. I have used the new climber on several evenings this week so far and it is actually wearin on me it's not a hassle to pack in or out and relativly quiet if you take you're time going up the tree. Unlike if you are constently packing in and out the hang on's with the stand, bow, pack and climbing sticks. Yes I also agree pulleye hopefully other hunters will respect your stand. The way I started hunting was on all private land now most of my bow hunting is on public due to living a distance from the familys property. I've never had the problem of other hunters taking property from eachother and IMO this souldn't be a problem sportsman do not need to discourage eachother from going out into the feild and enjoying their hunt. We have enuff problems with all of the activist groups out there.

Whenever I have, I always take my climbing sticks with me and just leave the stand. It dont take a lot of time to put em back up when you get out again. And its at least a little deterent. I even do this on private land that I have permission to hunt, just in case.

not being mean but its common sense. If i left a fishing rod over night at my fishing spot and someone walks by and takes it, they comitted no crime. I left my rod on public land, basikly leaving a stand on public land says you no longer want it and left it there for someone else. want the stand? take it down! chain it up and lock it and someone still takes it, well too bad you shuld never leave a stand up on public land anyways it is about equivilant to littering almost. one mans trash is another mans treasure one may say.

its legal to leave it up on public land? well take it down anyways! just because its legal does not mean it will be there the next day.

i hunt public land and theres one hang on that was well bolted to the tree that ppl wuld just give up trying to steal it, plus its placed at one of the best spots in the area. so why has no one stolen it or try to break it? because its at such a good spot and everyone can use it and hunt in it, plus since most of my family hunts there we know whos hunting in it and we all respect that its up there for all of us to use. we use the first come first serve method and it works out or you mark it with a flag and call everyone to tell them you will be hunting it. im basikly saying its about the same if i left a bench at a park for everyone to sit on and they all enjoy it so much tha no one has stolen it, but since its a public park anyone can take my bench and keep it even though i baught it, i left it there for anyone to use and do wat they wish to it.

If your stand was there legally and it was padlocked it is not abandoned property and therefore it was theft. That being said, its still a risky maneuver.

If you want to leave a hangon in the woods, anywhere, take your steps with you. If they want the stand they will have to work for it.

Honestly, I say the best deterrent is to take your stand with you anytime you don't plan to return the next day. I will leave a stand out overnight if I plan on coming back in the morning, but I will never leave a stand in the woods for any time.

If you prefer hangon's buy a lightweight combo like Lone Wolf. It weighs less than 20 lbs in a package and you can hunt from any tree that will support your weight. It will cost a lot, but not as much as losing a couple stands. Its light enough to carry in every time and packs well.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but its a risk with public land. Also, any stand left on public land cannot "claim" a spot so you runt he risk of getting in a confrontation with someone over your stand.

I feel ya man, I've had two taken from me... nothing you can really do about it. Neither of them were locked up but one wasn't even on public land and I had had it up for a few years now. Just found it it had been taken this year. My fault for leavin them out I guess but I still don't get people sometimes

Naures respect- you couldn't be more wrong! Try this analogy...I park my car in a public ramp with the keys in it, it's okay for someone to take it? Okay-so you are dumb for leaving the keys in it right? How about I lock my car in a public ramp and some one steals it? So "too bad for me" I shouldn't park my car in a public ramp? It's still private property. Yes-someone could hunt on it but to steal it? Yes-placing stands, fish markers, trail cameras out on public land is RISKY but under no circum stance should somebody be taking your property! I'm guessing you'd be okay and not feel guilty taking one????

I agree mabey sometimes I should have some more common sense heck if i did I've might have a little easyer time in life. But should I have to be worried about property being stolen I don't think so If you wanted to sit in my stand go ahead the law says so since I don't own the land. But to take property that does not belong to you is against everything I have learned growing up I just think that the priciple of it is [PoorWordUsage] people need to start respecting eachother. If I came out to your "Bolted on stand" and cut if off with a torch It's mine then right, no hard feelings!

There is no such thing as abandoned property in MN. If you find "lost property" you have to turn it over to the police or find the owner. I have seen too many people charged for this stuff. The "I found it" defense does not work. Plus you can be charged with receiving stolen property for just having it in your possession.

Minn. Stat. Section 609.52

Subd. 2.Acts constituting theft.

Whoever does any of the following commits theft and may be sentenced as provided in subdivision 3:

(1) intentionally and without claim of right takes, uses, transfers, conceals or retains possession of movable property of another without the other's consent and with intent to deprive the owner permanently of possession of the property; or

(6) finds lost property and, knowing or having reasonable means of ascertaining the true owner, appropriates it to the finder's own use or to that of another not entitled thereto without first having made reasonable effort to find the owner and offer and surrender the property to the owner;

The only way in a situation like this if you find an abandoned stand is to leave a note saying you took it, and to call the police and report that you are holding it. The police will usually take custody of the stand and maybe you get it after waiting for a long time. Usually, they sell it at a police auction and keep the money. You need to document your actions well or else you may have to fight it out in court.

People need to learn to just leave others property alone period I have never had a stand stolen on public property but I have had a number of them stolen off of private property and it is bull $hit! Even with locks on them they steal them. This year the only thing they have taken are the staps that hold the ladder sticks to the tree My guess is it was one of the tresspassers that I kicked out opening morning Funny thing is they only took the two bottom staps I am thinking they took the bottom stap off first and after taking the second strap they scared because the sticks started getting wobbly cowards! I have been up it three times I am just going to leave it that way I kinda like it keeps the chicken sh%@ that took them from getting up higher.

i guess my example was not too good. im just saying that there will always be someone who is going to take a stand you leave up. as for stealing the stand on the public land we hunt, go for it i can care less, everyone down there knoes that if it gets stolen no one will blame or complain about it.

this is like leaving sunglasses at a park and someone takes them and you later go and ask around if anyone sees them and you find the person with them but when you ask for them back and they say no, what do you do? call the cops? get into a fight? pay the person for it back?

In our kind of world you just cant expect to leave something and expect it there the next day, there will always be someone who wants to take it.

no matter how you try to lock it up someone will find a way to take it.

private land is a whole different story

this is like trying to stop poachers from poaching.

Now if your soo cheap to steal some small chinch straps I'd say a guy would have to be pretty hard up. Thats right it is a matter of respect for another person that shares the same interests as you. Treat people and their property as you would like your own. It's nothing too difficult might even be easyer than sneaking around in the woods looking for deer stands to take.
