Do you hate deer flies as much as I do?

Every year starting about the beginning of July and running through mid August the deer flies get impossible here. Just walking outside brings a group of the little offenders buzzing around my head, followed by those bloodthirsty bites. Going outside is just no fun at all.

Being a compulsive thinker, I strategized that if I combined flypaper and a hat, I could give them an opportunity to commit suicide just doing what they do. Here is the secret weapon, along with a week's worth of collection. I usually change the strip a couple of times a season, and it gets ALL of them before they get to biting me. Cobble your own version up and post a pic if you like. Mine looks pretty odd to the passerby, but it is always working when I'm out in the garden or mowing.

They are ferocious right now. I drove into the woods to check food plots (in my pickup with windows closed) and I think there were about 50 per side following me around. I was in my garage last night after dark, and got nailed by one that had gotten trapped in my garage during the day....$%#%&*% things! Can't wait til August 15th or 20th!

To all who dislike these things, figure out a way to get some flypaper onto your hat and the problem will be addressed. As I stated above, this concept gets almost all of them. I can walk into the woods and listen to the bzzzzt...zzt as they stick themselves one after another. They do not get away.

My little deer fly story, which is relevant on a fishing HSOforum.

I was working on the trolling motor on the boat, wearing some shorts which were wore out in the crotch.

I'll just say that I didn't really need Viagra for a bit.

Talk about a bad place to itch.

The sticky fly tape got me to thinking of another story.

One winter about 3 years ago, we had a very bad mouse problem in the house.

Finally, I got the bright idea that we would put sticky traps across the thresholds of all of the doors downstairs, to see which way the mice were travelling.

We were able to figure out which room they were coming in and out of, and slowly kept sliding the row of sticky traps across the room until we didn't catch any, but still caught them in the sticky trap by the door.

You'd wake up and there'd be 1-2, sometimes 3 mice stuck on the sticky traps, sometimes just a foot.

Anyways, for my then 5 year old's b-day, we decided we would get him a cat. His fish that he'd had since he was 2 died recently and we told him that when the fish dies, he could have a cat.

Anyways, we bring the cat home, and the next morning we hear very loud meowing. Come to find out, we'd forgot the sticky traps were still downstairs, the cat, upon investigating the new house, step on one, and since they were all locked in a row together, ended up basically rolling itself into a sticky trap blanket.

It wasn't too bad, we removed the traps fairly quickly, but for a moment, the cat looked a bit like the flies on the hat.

Might just have to give it a try. My wife gets a lot of swelling if she gets bit 2 or more times in the same area. Might look funny, but then again we're not winning any beauty contests in the woods anyway.

While landing a northern last weekend, I saw one chewing on my wrist nfor 5-6 seconds. It just stopped itching yesterday. July with flies usually has me wishing for the mosquitos of May/June.

Kind of a similar story... Pensacola Beach FL. 1974 Streak the beach one way and swim back the other. Meet jellyfish! Yowzers... Extreme discomfort, especially in the extra starch fatigues we wore at the time!

Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
