Son shot his 4th bird of the year tonight. A 25lb GIANT!

Mitch has been on quite a roll agian this year. #1 fell during the Wisconsin youth hunt. #2 Was a beautiful Minnesota bird that came in with 4 others, walking side by side until the shot went off. Then the last two.

I was hunting behind our house last Wednesday afternoon and had two nice toms with 4 hens come in but they hung up at 60 yards. I couldn't close the deal but we roosted them right behind the house. We waited until 10 P.M. and snuck out in the rain to set up the blind for him the next morning. I headed to work in a down pour as he headed out to the blind. He apparantly sat there until 7:30 when he saw a turkey walking along our North field. He couldn't hear a thing and assumed they had pitched down and walked off when he heard flapping wings. He looked out and had this drenched bird walk up and he put the smack on him at 20 yards. 20lb-9oz,10" beard.

Tonight he was on his own agian. I was working in the yard and he said he was going to ride down the road and see if he could see any out in the fields. A little later he shows back up and says that there was a big bird across the road and if he could go after it. I said have at it. He heads out and 15 minutes later I hear him shoot. He said, the bird had been on the South side of this rolling field. He snuck along the North side along a tree line. He was standing there with my tom decoy when he thought he saw a head sticking up on the other side of a hill. He got his binocs and it was gone. Then he saw 2 others and then a fan appeared coming right at him. He got down and crawled up to a big rock with the decoys fan covering his movements. He stuck the decoy right in front of him and was peeking past it when he saw the bird start running towards him, then break into strut and come into 22 yards when he touched off the shot. 25lbs even, with a

10-1/2" beard and 1-3/8 spurs. Bigger than any bird I've ever taken and 5 ozs lighter than the biggest bird taken this year at the local bait shop. Real proud of him.

How about a raffle to hunt that property with Mitch as the guide next spring? All proceeds can go to his 529... grin

Congrats on a spectacular bird. Gonna be hard to beat this year!

I think that young'n gets so lucky cause he'd rather be outdoors than home playing the video game. I also think Dad has taught him well!

Thanks for all the nice comments for Mitchell. He does truly love the outdoors as much as his dad and I hope that he has the opportunity to share and make as many memories with his kids as I've had with mine. Every one of my kids has developed different interests and I'm always grateful when my oldest son or daughter ask to be taken out as well, even though it's not very often. I know they see how much Mitchell and I love it, and maybe in time they will see how truly relaxing and rewarding it can be.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
