We are staying up near Terry Peak, outside of Lead. We stay up there every summer.

How are the trails out there? Do they have marked ones or do you ride logging or forest roads? Also, can you ride trail bikes on them or just 4 wheelers?

There are marked trails that intersect with the roads. Not sure about the bikes, that isn't anything we've ever checked into.

Thanks, I have both a wheeler and Dual Sport so thought I would bring both if I ever get a chance to go out there.

A FM ride would be great!! I live in the Silver Bay area about an hour north of Duluth. Not sure if anyone remembers or if anyone participated, but last year we broke the Guinness Book of World Records with the longest ATV parade. With over 2,000 ATV's cruising around on the trails like the Moose walk, Moose run, and Red Dot, we ran into very few people and everyone loved the scenery with the cliffs and views of Lake Superior. Just a thought..

4wheelinmama: I want to pick your brain a bit about riding out in S.D. I have a group of guys that I ride with 3-4 times a year and we are planning on going out west next year, preferably S.D. So if you don't mind when you have time, I'd like to get some info from you.

Natalie: That sounds like an awesome time up there. Definitely is some beautiful country up there. Would have loved to got into that. I did hear about the new record though, congrats on being part of it.

4wheelingmama - We actually just had a (memorial) poker run up here last weekend. Not to many people from out of town, but I don't think the word got out to many people. If nothing else, book a room or campsite now to come up in the fall, the colors are beautiful!! Plus for an extra bonus NO BUGS!! smile

Natalie, I met some guys up on the NS trail last fall when I was doing some Grouse hunting and they said that they were doing a motel to motel run up the trail which sounded like a Great idea that time of the year! cool 4wheelingmama, I wish I could get up to the Paul Bunyon some time this summer or fall. Did you stop in at the Stumping Grounds for a bite and (pop)? ;)I know all the trails very well since I have Deer hunted up there for the last 30 years. Great trails.

leech- We actually stayed at the Stomping Grounds. What a wonderful campsite! We did have some "pop" probably way to much "pop". There a big ATV ride the weekend we were up there so things got a little crazy come night time. It was a super fun weekend. I'd had never been up there before.

I'm looking for a nice camping area that is atv friendly, in and around the Lead/Deadwood area. We are planning on going out there with 2 tow trailers and a camper. Overall, what kind of riding is it out there for the most part. Done some research on it, but always better to hear it from experience. Do you recommend bringing food to prepare your self, is it easier to find a food joint, or plan on both? Anything maybe out of the norm from riding in the northwoods that should be included in our backpacks that one may not of? I'm guessing it's fairly dry out there? Should one prepare for alot of dusty riding? Lastly, can I ride into downtown Deadwood for a buffet and some blackjack at Mr.Costners Casino? :P I'm sure you may have other things to share, feel free to let me know of anything I may want to know. I gladly appreciate your tips with my planning of my 1st trip out there.

I heard they built a camp ground but have not seen it yet. How many sites do you think they have there? That could be a very good location for a FM get together ride some weekend. Was it pretty packed with riders? If we were able to get a bunch of FM's together we may have to put in some Reso's to save camp spots I would think? Are they selling gas yet? I know town is only a few miles away but that would just about wrap up every thing they would need for riders. Camping, Gas, food & a Pop stop! All out in the middle of the woods! I have to get up there soon! crylaugh

Gator - If you are looking for a campground, Trout Haven is very nice and ATV friendly. You even rent them there if you need. We usually rent a cabin up in the hills about 5 miles out of leads. But then you are looking at alot more $$. The 2 bedroom we stay in is $300 per night vs. a camp ground of $30-$60 per night. One thing you will also want to take into considerations when you are planning the date you will be out there is Sturgis. Everything is WAY more spendy and VERY crowded.

As far as riding goes, you're not going to find a lot of mud holes, or water to play in. There are a lot of rocks and it is dusty! Riding in the badlands is fun too, but make sure to get a map. There is bunch of privet property out there. I am part of the SD ATV HSOforum. That is a good tool to use if you are going out there. All the members are super helpful. One guy Ed Goss and his wife give free guided tours. Their tours are pretty easy riding, but it's through beautiful country and you won't get lost. There is a trail not to far out of lead that takes you by the town of Nemo, and south a ways. I think it's about a 30 mile stretch. That's a fun ride too. You can ride you 4 wheeler on the roads, so you can take them into any town you want as long as you have your licens plate showing with current tabs. Bring sun screen. The frist time i went out there I was SO burnt! You wont need bug spray, since there are no mosquitos. We bring most of our own food, just to cut down on cost. We go out a couple of nights for supper and drinks, otherwise we just stay put at the cabin.

leech- Right now there are 14 full hook-ups with power and water and a bunch of prim. sites. There are in the process of working on 14-16 more full hooks and another prim site. It would be a great location for a ride. All the sites were full the weekend we were there, but there was still plenty of room to play around. There is also a shower house with toilets and it was very clean and nice...with hot water too! They don't have gas, but as you said town is only a couple of miles way. They do have a spot to wash your 4 wheelers though. I will definatly be back... hopefully this summer again!

Mama, thanks for the update on the campground and their setup. I know if one mama thinks the showers and bathrooms are clean and nice, then mine will think so also! wink Now when and who can go! smile

Awesome Mama, sounds like a great time. I will definitely get in contact with Ed as one guy asked about a guided tour. When is really the best time to go out there? May, June, July? I will be avoiding sturgis rally time for sure. If I have anyother ?'s I will get in contact with you.

I would avoid the last couple weeks of July and the first two of August. If you like it warm during the day. I would say the second week of July. If you like it a little cooler, the middle to end of may or september. June is pretty rainy out there, but if you do catch a nice week. the weather is beautiful!

What about a preliminary ride this year for FM'ers (HSO)?

If we could plan this soon is anyone up for it, I think we should make the riding easy with some access to Mudd for (GR8ice) just kidding....

Everyone can look at the DNR wesite and give some ideas for trails or a weekend and lets do this.

I'm up for it. Just about any weekend works for me. I'd suggest the Paul Bunyon forest camping at the Stompin Grounds campground if more then a one day ride, or maybe Namadji (sp) cool
