Top 5 hunting rifles

Recommended Posts

Brands, hmmm, let's see. How bout we expand to models as well.

1. Remington model 700.

2. Browning A-bolt.

3. Winchester Model 70.

4. Ruger M-77.

5. Savage Model 99.

As you can see, I'm a sucker for the bolt-action (except for the 99). If hunting in tight quarters where supreme accuracy is not paramount, I would have to tip my hat to the Winchester 94, as well as the Remington 760/7600. BTW, I put the savage 99 ahead of the Wincester 94 due to its ability to shoot pointy bullets. I know this has changed recently with leverevolution rounds.

Top of my list right now is any Savage with the Accutrigger. It may not be the prettiest horse in the race, but it is a great barrel on the rifle and the accutrigger is an awesome addition to their lines.

Brownings, Weatherby's, Tikka's and Remington round out the rest of my top 5....

Next up for me though will 2 youth model Henry .22 lever actions for my sons (9 and 7) but it won't be for a couple more years.

1. For rodent sized game at ranges over a hundred yards Savage with an Accutrigger and heavy barrel. .223, 22-250 or 17 rem.

2. For coyote and fox, Ar-15 from Armalite or Remington with a 22-24" barrel in .223 or .204 Ruger.

3. For antelope or whitetail sized game at long range in open terrain Weatherby Ultralight in .257wby. Especialy if you have to carry the rifle a ways or are after mountain game.

4. For elk or lager bears and lots of African game Weatherby MK V in 340wby mag.

5. For long range plinking of heavy steel targets Shiloh Sharps in 45-110.

Kimber makes some really nice 22 rimfires, Winchester and Savage are tops for lever guns especially the vintage ones, And Browning makes some really outstanding semiauto centerfires. If you want a custom rifle the Remington 700 or Mauser 98 type action are good picks.

If I were to make up a list like this a few months from now I would likely have some different choices.

Ruger #1 and Winchester model 70. There isn't a more versatile and accurate rifle made than either of these!! The ruger is a single shot lever and win model 70 is a bolt. Either is unbeatable IMO

Ruger is near the top. Maybe a Remmington XCR in .30-06, followed by a T/C Encore pro/hunter with a .300 win/mag barrel for the top 3. Then we get aggressive... Sako Finnbear in a .308 followed by, my favorite whitetail weapon, the 336 Marlin blued/scoped in .35 Rem. Skol.

I know the art of driving deer is about dead, and shooting at running deer is taboo, but the browning BAR is the best there is for quick shots, and follow up shots. Winchester model 70 is my stand rifle, extremely accurate. Weatherby mark V's are the best, IMO, I don't have one, but my brother and girlfriend each have one, the short bolt throw, long barrel and still lightweight make it the best rifle I've ever shot.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
