Wednesday this bird got hung up about 60 yards out from my decoy. So on Thursday I left the decoy in the truck and I toned down my calling. He came looking for me from about 2oo yards. 24 pds 2oz, 9 in beard & one spur 1 in & the other one was broken off half way.

I was able to finish off my E season with some luck. Went out scouting last night and saw a longbeard and 2 jakes feeding in a field, watched them head into the woods a little after 8:00, stopped by the farmers house got permission. Set up this morning stayed a little back, not exactly sure were they roosted. No gobbling on the roost, and a late fly down. One of the 3 starts to gobble in the woods, and slowly works his way to the field. Now all 3 are heading our way,the jakes get to about 20 yds. and decide to fly across the river. The tom is still slowly working his in,he is limping pretty bad. The wind had our decoy turn and face him, he strutting on and off for 10 min. FInally he gets to under 50 yds when he turns to face the river,Thinking he might follow the jakes lead I get ready boom turkey down!!! 21.5# 11" beard 1 1/8" spurs. Weather was tough last couple off days, Hopefully it improves for those still chasin good luckDSCF1965.jpg

I hunted (WI) Apr 21 thru the 25th with no luck. This is my first time hunting so I wasnt expecting much. I picked up a second season May 12-16th. I have been seeing a tom on my parents property and the neighbors as well. I went out yesterday and heard nothing, but as I was heading home to get ready for work I saw him in the neighbors field. I went our there last night right before dark to see if I could see anything, and sure enough as I turned the corner he was just taking off into the trees on the neighbers property. I called the neighbor and got permission to set up there this morning.

I got out there early this morning and set up a jake and a hen decoy. I work at 830 so I dont have much time in the morning to hunt. It was raining all morning. I was calling very little and getting no response when I did, so I gave one more call and put it away. It was getting time for me to head in, so I set my gun down, stood up, with my chair between my legs, and I look to the left and there he is, 10 ft into the field about 75 yds away. I am still a little concealed by a tree but now I am wondering how I am going to get my gun up. He saw my decoys and worked his way towards me. He was looking the other way and I was able to grab my gun, and everytime he looked down, I inched the gun closer and closer to my shoulder. This process took about 10 min and the whole time I was in the standing crouch position tryin not to move...my legs and back were burning! He came to about 35-40 yds and I took the shot. He is 20 lbs with a 9.5" beard and 3/4" spurs.

Unfortunately I was alone and couldnt take any pics in the field so I had to settle for my wife taking a pic in the garage. The fan was soaked, and I wish I couldve gotten some better pics, but very excited about my first bird!!

My buddy Dave and I hunt together in Wisconsin. Opening morning of our season, May 5th, Dave shot this 25 pound hawg, with an 11" beard. I was carrying my bow at the time and this bird was just out of my range, otherwise I probably would have been the one to tag out early.

Three days later it was my turn. I had traded in my bow for the gun by now and wouldn't you know it, I shot this one at 15 yards. He's 22 lbs. with a 9 1/2" beard.

Well the morning started out slow and it just got better and better.

Today was the first day of our turkey season and I woke up to howling wind and my son was no where to be seen. So I check my cell phone to find at he was on his way home and it was going to be close. Man opening day and I might actually be late! Well he got home and we hurried to our spots. When I got to my blind I quickly set up a Jake Mobile decoy as there is currently a lot of breeding going on and wanted to tick off a mature bird with an intruding jake in full strut. I didn't hear or see a turkey for what seemed like forever. But then around 9 am I see turkys on the other end of a field I was hunting and there was a lot of them. I worked them and they seemed responsive to my boxcall and nothing else. I'd do a few yelps and they'd come running. This group consisted of 10 hens with two of the hens sporting beards. It's still early so I yet them walk. Although I played with them a while and then left them alone to walk away.

About 11 am I see a lone turkey on the other end of the field. It appeared to be a 2 year old bird with a heavy 7-8" beard. When he saw the jake decoy he ducked into the woods. But then reappear 10 minutes later and would gobble and strut when I called but just didn't appear to want to deal with the jake. The wind was blowing so hard I couldn' hear him gobbling even though he was inside 100 yards. But I could see him gobble every time. He worked his way further and further away until he disappeared in the leafy woods.

Just ten minutes later a see a turkey coming into the field from another direction. I hi8t him with a few yelps on my home turned slate and striker. His head jerk-baits up and he sees the strutting jake. He works his way to the strutting jake. The last 30 yards that he covered to get to the decoy were at a full run. He got into a beak to beak posture with the decoy and I wait for him to set away and I gave him a killer headache and a ride in my truck.

He's a typical 2 year old bird weighing 18 1/2 lbs, a 7 " beard and 7/8 and 1" spurs.

Nice birds guys. Congrats. Borch did you get your bird in the Blind 2 funnel?

No, in blind one. Although I should have been in blind 2 today with my brother. There was a lot of gobbling over there.

My son Travis scored this morning with a Jake. He wasn't able to hunt early this morning but headed out around 8:30 am and went to the property where we'd been seening most of our birds this spring. When he got there the farmer was working in his fields so he went to a neighboring property that we hunt as well. When he got there he saw birds in the edge of the field and he needed top back out and take a different route so not to spook them. He snuck through the woods and got to a palce where he cold see that they were still there but still couldn't tell what they were. He layed down in the tall grass and gave them a few yelps and purrs. The birds start clucking and moving closer. In his position he couldn't see them but as they continued to cluck they were obviously getting closer and closer. He sat up a little bit and there they were only 10 feet away! One bird had a 4" beard and he shot it. The bird when doen and flopped so much that most of it's tail feathers fell out only leaving 5 intact. Based on the head color he thought it was a bearded jake. When he got it home even I had a tough time identifying it witout the tail feathers as it had a smaller grey head. But after closer inspection there was one of the taller primary tail feather left. It had 3/8" spurs, weighed 14.8lbs and the breast feather tips were black. Definitely a jake.

Here's a pic of Travis's beat up jake.

Got a nice 23 pound, 9 1/2" beard with 1 1/8" spurs this morning. I had the best decoy a guy could ask for, a live hen he was chassing, she sat 6 to 7 feet away just purring away it was great. Then he came in at 17 yards and he was done. Pictures to come!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
