Vicious line

I used the 17lb test last fall for texas rigs and finesse jigs. It performed well for me. Never had a break-off with it and it didn't feel any stiffer or more supple than other flouros I've tried, a good medium you could say.

To start this year I'm planning on switching over to it for all my flourocarbon applications. In the past I've used mainly berkely 100% and triple fish. Nothing wrong with those products, but I just want to try something else to see how I like it. Its at a good price too, much like triple fish.

I bought a big spool of 10 lb a couple years ago and didn't like it. I thought it was too stiff for a spinning reel. I used it on a crankbait rod and had better luck with it on a baitcaster...

I checked Cabela's and read the user reviews. Nearly every one of the "one-star" ratings were from those that used it on a spinning reel.

I THOUGHT I read where you don't use ANY (brand) fluorocarbon on spinning reels... it's too stiff for that application. Used mono or braid on spinning reels, and mono/braid/fluoro on baitcasters, right?

Thanks.

Bob

You can use Floro on spinning reels but its best if kept 8lb or lighter.. Its the main reason I have gone to dropshotting with a baitcaster.. so I can use heavier test..

Thanks, that makes sense.

In a previous post on this thread, you mentioned that you use co-polymer line. I've used GAMMA co-polymer (because of the small diameter vs. "real" break-strength) with good results. If you are able, would you mind sharing what brand co-polymer that you use/recommend?

Thanks!

Well, I "was" on Gamma's ProStaff.. And its still the line I recommend. I still probably have a 3 years supply left and will continue to use Gamma till I run out. After that I too will be searching for a different line to use.

I still have hopes that a different manufacture will buy the fishing devision of Gamma and continue to make the line. I still feel its the best I have ever used. P-Line was another I had good luck with, but it was a bit stiffer.

Thanks. Yeah, I had read (on this forum I think) about Gamma first "going out of business"... and then reading that it was just "for sale". I hope that someone buys them but continues making the line (and that you get your sponsorship back)! grin

NTW- Shhhh, its a secret.. But yes.. For as much as I dropshot, which in July early Aug is a TON, for the most part I would say that 80% or better was with a Baitcast and 10lb Floro.. I was using the Shimano Crucial baitcast dropshot rod.. Love that stick.. I think I lost far fewer fish on the baitcast too and felt I was able to control the fish better too. I dint have to "pansy" around the boat hoping they woudlnt break off on the 6lb I have on my spin set up.

NTW- like with anything.. change stuff up if it doesnt feel right for you. For me, it was really wanting more power and needing to find a rod that worked for me. I kind of do things quite a bit differently on a carolina rig too.. You just have to adapt what is working for others and make it your own.

Give the baitcast rod a shot, you just need to find one with a soft tip. I do still think that is key!

DD...

Did you find yourself "throwing" larger baits with the baitcast rod and 10lb line? If so, how has that changed your success and size of fish caught as compared to the 6lb line and smaller baits?

zep- yes and no.. I felt I was able to upsize when needed. I did at times when looking for larger fish during tournaments put on larger lures. Really hard to say if it helped or not, I did manage to catch "Big Bass" on a couple events on a Very large Tube called a Tubo Tube, its a 5" huge tube that I was dropshotting.. but realy only got a few fish on it. But they were big.. I dont think I would have used it with the light line and whip stick as I dont think I would have got enough hook penitration on the hookset.

But again, hindsight is really hard to say.. I just know I am more confident with the baitcast in my hand. I plan on adding another baitcast dropshot combo before spring.. and already sold off one of my spinning set ups. So, now I am down to 3 set ups, but will will be back to 4 before spring. 8-)

glad to help.. I use the stand out hooks in black.. hard to find them in black, red is easy, but I am not a fan of the red, they scratch and turn to gold after just a few fish..

As for size, I just try to match it as best I can to the plastic I am using.. 1/0 I suppose I use the most I think..
