Amsoil vs Electric Auger??

BLACKJACK

Question

I hate the way my gas auger smokes up my fish house and even puts a black oily film on the walls when augering holes, was thinking of purchasing an electric auger for inside the house. My gas/oil is mixed 50:1 with Stihl oil, I use it in my chain saw also. Of course they say their oil is so good that it won't hurt my auger that requires 40:1 and so far it hasn't - but it smokes pretty good, especially at first.

Now everybody is raving about this Amsoil. When you run that 80:1 or 100:1, how much does it smoke?

How about warranties? If a person runs 80:1 oil in a new auger that specifies 40:1 or a new chainsaw that specifies 50:1, what going to happen if the engine blows?

I have been running about 80:1 in my SM, in the perm house it still leaves a lot of smoke, and smells terrible. I know am running an IceGator, there is no longer an issue with smoke at all, nor do I have to worry about my hands smelling like gas. They sure are great for the perm house!

Thats why I like this site, you get answers from guys that have 'been there done that'. Thanks!

I guess mixing up some gas with Amsoil is not going to be a cheaper alternative to an electric auger!!!

So what makes Amsoil so great and wonderful? Why better than the brand name mix oils like Pennzoil or Stihl?

I did have a sm electra Auger. I sold it. It was nice for drilling in the shack but for everything else it left a lot to be desired.

I got a SM laser and mix Amsoil at 100:1 and have very little to almost no smoke in the house when drilling. You still get fumes of exhaust gases but very little smoke and the auger runs a lot better with the thin mixture. Amsoil is so good compared to other brands because it is formulated to be used at 100:1 where almost all others require thicker mixtures.

AMSOIL Saber Professional is not a petroleum product. It is a full synthetic man made oil - using a di-ester base - by combining an alcohol with a fatty acid (both agricultural by-products). It is ashless, burns away clean leaving no carbon buildup behind.

For safety, please leave your door open when operating your auger in your fish house. It does still put out carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. But it is much easier and quicker to air out than when using petroleum based 2-cycle lubes.

Blackjack, I'd presume you now have a gas auger, correct?? Why don't you TRY a 1 gallon mix with Amsoil Saber Professional. Once you use Amsoil, you're NOT committed to using it always (although you'll WANT to). If you're not happy with the decreased amount of 'smoke', and the increased overall improved performance of the auger after that gallon is run through (it'll take some running time to clean out the dinosauer residue), switch back to the dino oil and spend your cash on an electric. If you go with a pillow pack, it'll cost you ~$2.50 (ballpark).. Not a lot to spend compared to the cost of the auger and battery, I'm sure you'll be impressed. When you decide to stay with the Amsoil, you'll be able to order a case of pillow packs and still have a bunch of $$$ left over for other goodies!! Phred52

Phred, note the first two posters after my original post, they both said that the fish house still got smoked up with Strikemaster augers using Amsoil. The voice of experience that I was looking for. My original thought that was that instead of spending $400 for an electric auger maybe this Amsoil would run so clean that the electric wouldn't be needed but their voices of experience said thats NOT the case.

Yes I could spend $2.50 for some Amsoil and try it but to what purpose if it doesn't cure the 'smoke in the fishhouse problem'??? My SM runs fine with the 50:1 Stihl mix that I'm using in it. And I have a 5 pack of them left, thats 12.5 gallons of mix that I need to go thru before I buy more mixing oil.

If the ice was 2 feet thick, how many new holes can you drill with an electric auger? Does really cold weather decrease the number? Thanks.

My IceGator Attacker is rated for 40 holes on one charge in 28 inches of ice. Or about 100 holes through 10 inches. That's rated to -30 temps with an 8-inch drill.

I don't own a permie shack. I use the Gator for my day-to-day ice fishing and am loving it. I have a Nils drill on it. Cuts really fast, too. Nils on a Gator = best of both worlds.

I run a SM with amsoil and yes it is better than most oils but it is in no way smokless or fumeless. Even with the window open etc. it takes some time to get the fumes out and I am not to keen on myself and my kids breathing the stuff in. I am seriously looking at and electric for next year.

I would have to say in -20, I can get about 40 holes out of it, drilling 2 feet of ice. After that, it still will drill, but it slows down, and you need to run the ice chips out of the hole, and you can get maybe another 10 holes out of it.

My Nils does not smoke at all running 80-1 with Amsoil Sabre.

My StrikeMaster does not smoke much with Amsoil Sabre mixed at 40-1. Thats the rate StrikeMaster wants in the new Solo.

Is that what they want with their oil? The sabre should be good for 80:1 in that also right Harvey? Are you just breaking it in at 40:1 or being extra cautious?

BlackJack : it sounds like you already made up your mind! I have a sm and I switched it to sabre and it is a whole new machine now! Oh and it has a 2 stroke motor on it so it smokes... VERY little if at all compared to before with the sm oil. The only way to get the fumes out is to go electic. I have no issues with mine but I also understand it puts out exhaust...
