Why does the 2010 opener start a week later (may 15th) this year?

To conflict with Mother's Day, of course.

probably has something to do with spawning in the northern part of the state. there is often some talk about letting the southern half go a little earlier. considering the lack of snow and cold temps, might be a good thing this year.

From the Mn State Statutes:

97C.395 OPEN SEASONS FOR ANGLING.

Subdivision 1.Dates for certain species.(a) The open seasons to take fish by angling are as follows:

(1) for walleye, sauger, northern pike, muskellunge, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass, the Saturday two weeks prior to the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend to the last Sunday in February;

(8) The commissioner shall close the season in areas of the state where fish are spawning and closing the season will protect the resource.

Where can I find the 2010 fishing regs? Are they posted yet online? If so I can't find them. If not, where did you find opener dates?

The 2010 and 2011 opener dates are on page 19 of the 2009 regs.

Don't quote me, but it seems something about the closest Saturday to May 15. I read it awhile back, maybe on the dnr site?

In this boom economy, I'm sure the fishing industry in Minnesota is real happy about losing a weeks worth of revenue.

i cant wait for opener already! ice fishing is fun and all, but there is just something about fishing two little holes in the ice that doesnt suit my needs.

i was sitting in my boat today in the garage... dream trolling... didnt get anything but i did miss a hook set on a really nice one
