8" vs. 10" hole

These 8 or 10 inch size auger hole discussions have a tendancy to give me gas because the ones that do all the [PoorWordUsage] about them are the ones who are stepping in them it seems, but they act like it is the holes fault or the ones drilling them fault . The chances of stepping in a hole is like finding a needle in a haystack and if your in an area where anglers gather in large numbers then you should have your wits about you . Take the responsibility yourself and shake your head at yourself for being so stupid if you step in one .

If there is a meltdown or water laying on the ice when it drains your little weenie 6 inch holes get bigger too as will an 8 or a ten . Then when it snows and my foot goes down shall I come here and complain about stepping in one and pass blame ?

I have both an 8 inch and a 10 auger. Yes I've stepped in both before . Big deal . It was my own fault for not looking or feeling where I was putting my feet .

There are risks involved in icefishing . Accept those risks and if your worried whether it's a ten inch hole you might be around that creates stress . You really should stay home and give up icefishing all together . I don't say that to be mean but the folks worrying are not cut out to be icefishermen .

I have yet to ever hear of one fatality caused by a ten inch hole . Sounds safe to me . I also don't recall my momma cussing and blaming the Almighty upstairs because I came home with a soaker . I actually wish that excuse or passing blame would have flew . LOL

I love fishing out of a 10" hole. I fish a really clear lake, can see bottom in 16 - 17 feet so we do a lot of sight fishing and the bigger the hole the better for that. I've never lost anything down a 10" hole that wouldn't have fit down an 8" hole. My 10" lazer is not slow either like I've heard suggested in a couple posts, smokes the cr@p outta my buddies 8" jiffy, I can almost drill 3 holes to his 2.

Apparently I'm stupid because I fell into a 10" hole on a local lake over the weekend. It was snowing and a skim of ice had covered and camouflaged the hole. Dragging my sled to the spot I planned on fishing, my leg was plunged up to my upper thigh in ice water and I got to spend the evening wet and freezing.

Had my son been out there, I could be attending a funeral right now instead of reading about how convenient a 10" hole is for landing 20' northerns or how your 10" auger can make swiss cheese out of Mille Lacs in 60 seconds.

I suppose that if a kid falls through an ice hole, trapperdirk makes the assumption that either the kid or the parent must be stupid. I guess kids have to be on leashes and not allowed to play out there so trapperdirk can land the 20' northern. Way to introduce little ones to the sport.

Honestly, I can't believe they produce 10" augers or that anyone with kids would buy one. Same bigger-is-better, forget-everyone-else mentality that keeps people buying pitbulls, I gather.

Come on now. Really? I think being upset at getting wet is clouding your judgement a bit. I have a 10" auger and can assure you my thought process have never been "forget everyone else."

Well yes kids should be watched close ALWAYS . Maybe you can enlighten me and give me a story of a ten inch hole ever causing a fatality . If that hole had been a 6 inch hole and the lake had drained off thru it would you not got a soaker too mixxedbagg ? And why would you allow your son to lead on unseen ice . ?

Your blaming the hole and the driller and not taking responsibility for your own actions .

If your unsure of what's ahead of you then pick, pick, pick . Trust me I do especially here on the lady Simcoe since most operators have holes that are cut out of the ice and could be 3x 5' in size and although they mark them the markers will and do get blown down after they leave .

I don't risk kids lives and if it requires a leash then that's what I will attach . I never had too with mine but then again they did listen well . When young they had to hold my hand crossing the street . As far as them leading . ? Now that would be really stupid . Get yourself a chisel and stay dry .

I'll likely get a soaker this year too and yes I'll call myself stupid .

I too have made the mistake of purchasing a 10" auger many years ago. The one and only time I decide to go all out and buy the best there was, IMO it was a mistake. It was way too heavy, didn't even fit in the holes of some guys old homemade fish houses, slow, and did I mention heavy?

After about 3 years or so with that auger and I ended up selling it and buying a strikemaster 8". I have never regreted it! Way lighter and faster, plus I think that the 2 hp motors sometimes run better than the 3 hp for some reason. Not to say you couldnt have a really good running 3 hp, It is just my experience that they either are really good or really bad.

Also, I wanted to get rid of that 10" before my son was old enough to go with me. I'm not sure if a 2 or 3 year old could slip completely down a 10" hole but I didn't want to find out either. Even now at 9 years old I think he would easily fit both feet in a 10incher especially when in the perm where it gets warm enough to take off most of your bulky warm clothing.

As far as watching a small kid every second while on the ice on a nice day..........good luck with that!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
