jigging-matt
Is it me or do our safeties fly around and try to knock everyone into next week, but the NEVER WRAP UP their tackles. Williams misses so many tackles because of this, and Sanford took EJ out with one of his flying tags. We would be a lot better if they would wrap up and not just fly around and try to make the next big hit to show on sportcenter.
zepman
Our safeties need alot of help...one of the weak spots on the team...no doubt.
croixflats
The days of legend, we need a Joey Browner or a Robert Griffith(not Griffin) Punishers baby and someone that knew how to tackle. But they were the elite not many out there like them.
Steve Foss
I don't think it's limited to the Vikes at all. There's a lot of lack of basic tackling skills all over the place in pro defensive backfields. Always looks better on TV to slice 'em and dice 'em than wrap 'em up. Big Dave2
Yeah but nobody seems to mind when a safety whacks a receiver and knocks him backwards 1 yard short of a 1st down on 3rd down. Then everyone cheers.
greebs
trying to smash the ball carrier into next week instead of wrapping and tackling is pretty commonplace in the game today. don't care for it and think that is why there are so many concussions occuring and oftentimes the player injures his own teammate because he misses the ball carrier and smashes into his teammate.I've seen it numerous times where the defender hits the guy with the ball and doesn't wrap and the ball carrier ends up bouncing off and getting more yardage. I also notice a lot of safeties run alongside a ball carrier for 20 + yards trying to push him out of bounds and then finally dive for his legs as he crosses the goal line. How about going for the legs back on the 40 yard line when you first started trying to push him out of bounds?
TR21
Steve nailed it right on the head. It is the style of play being exhibited by 90% of the players in todays game. It is encouraged both by television and high school and college coaches as well. It is indicative of todays athletes - the whole intimidation thing that is exhibited in most sports today.Technique has gone out the window in favor of the big hit along with the taunting by a tackler after a 20 yard run.If we attempted to hit a running back up high without wrapping up in college or the pros it would have been a very long day for us in practice. It's just the current state of the game. crothmeier
the high school coach when i played football didnt teach this. you got taken out if you didnt wrap up. i dont see this happening on a high school level. nfl is another thing. there are a few times i can say now theres a good sound tackle. more often than not one guy grabs on and the next 3 come flying in head first. no wonder the concussion thing is so big right now. EJ's leg wouldnt be broken had sanford go for a wrap up tackle instead of the swinging for the fences and whiffing.and why cant kickers practice tackling? they are the most pathetic looking when it gets to them! they cant spend all practice long kicking, get them some pursuit/angle tackling drills going to prevent some of those special teams TDS
croixflats
Kickers should at least be able to run a 12 minute mile.
Big Dave2
NFL players are a lot bigger and stronger than anyone we played in HS. But if you leg tackle on every play, the ball carrier can fight and fall forward for 2-3 yards every play. If you let that happen its a first down every 3 or 4 plays just being leg tackled at or around the line of scrimmage.

I remember Fuad Reveiz once got an unnecessary roughness flag on a kickoff return, he flattened a guy, too bad he was 5 yards out of bounds

greebs
anybody see the lions/titans highlights when the lion safety attempted the hilight spear and proceeded to knock his teammate off the receiver who proceeded to run it in for a long td? This would be a good one for hs and younger coaches to tape and show the kids on what can happen when you try to ram the other player instead of good wrapping and tackling.
