Its gonna be soon guys after Wednesday Dec 2nd.

Crappie, I sure hope your right, I booked a trip to LOW for Dec 17. My 11 yr old sons first trip up there. He's going crazy "dad is there going to be enough ice to go?" ( about 2-3 times daily)

Can't blame him I guess if I had someone to ask I would too

SO, DOES ANYBODY KNOW: IS THERE GOING TO BE ENOUGH ICE TO GO?

That could be Iffy. The main lake hasn't had any sort of ice on ice on it yet. However the rivers and bays of the rivers and the marina's have had ice on them off and on the past few weeks though. You have to remember too, this is a big lake, and it takes a lot of cold temps to freeze it enough to take any type of vehicle on it.

There is hope... I was at the in-laws this Saturday, November 28th--they live 20 miles north of Deer River here in the upper part of the state, and they live on a lake with a big shallow bay on their end and a deep hole on the other end. I was able to walk a couple feet out on the shallow bay end, but the ice started to spider right away... Right at shore there is maybe an inch or just over, and it thins out after a few feet to maybe a 1/2 inch. Meanwhile, any lakes with any depth or less shelter from the wind are wide open still. There will be ice soon, though, so no panicking!

It has varied a lot over the last 10 years. From my journal I have noted:

12/14/1998:

Highs near 50f. No ice on lakes; skim on ponds in the morning.

12/12/1999:

High of 48f today. no ice.

11/21/2000:

Low of 1f in Mpls.

11/27/2000:

Ice fishing and skating on Prior lake.

12/10/2000:

Low of -10f this morning.

12/10/2001:

High of 48f today. No ice.

1/18/2002:

Finaly drivable ice in Metro.

12/14/2002:

4-6" on most metro lakes.

12/06/2003:

Bays of Minnetonka have 3-4". Big parts of lake wide open.

12/19/2004:

6-8" on most metro lakes.

12/10/2005:

6-8" metro ice.

12/6/2006:

4-6" metro ice.

12/7/2007:

4-6" metro ice.

12/05/2008:

4-6" metro ice.

The early winter's of 98,99, and 01 were not good ones for ice and we didn't get on the ice around the metro until about Christmas.
