jason mitchell vs. thorne bros for panfish?

so this year the only significant ice fishing purchase im gonna make is a new pannie rod/reel combo. ive had trouble in the past with extremely light biting crappies and detecting the bite. there was a couple outings last year where i was outfished 3-1 cuz i couldnt feel them. im looking at either jason mitchells meat stick and elite series 24ml panfish or thorne's panfish sweetheart, power noodle and perch sweetheart. i mainly target crappies and gills if they are in the same spots. i usually jig with plastics or fish with minnows. i am willing to put up to about $80 in for a combo, but if the jason mitchell products work well, id rather stick to the $50 for their combo, as the budget is a little thinner this year, due to my spending on auger and other things last year. also, if it matters, i plan to hit the croix much more often this year to try for some slabs.

I was in the same boat as you last year and went for the TB Power Noodle with the titanum guides. The best ice purchase I have ever made after a power auger.

The rods are great and showing the really light bites, and the lift bites too. Nice backbone for getting those fish up, but great sensitivity without having to worry about a spring bobber.

I have a Thorne Brothers Perch sweetheart rod with a shimano Sedona reel. I would say that it is an outstanding combo. Thorne rods are second to none. I can't comment about the mitchell rods because I haven't tried one or fished with anyone that has one.

I have a meatsticks and 3 power noodles. I've only used the meatstick for deadsticking smalleye and sauger out of dayshacks on LOW with live bait.

I'm pretty sure a Jason Mitchell Meatstick would put just as many fish on the ice as a T.B. power noodle under most conditions. If your on a budget, I'd go that way. The Thorne Brother rods are exceptional and made locally - hard to pass up if you can afford it.

I fish the St. Croix all the time if you ever want to try them out before buying, let me know. Hard to wait I know, but more than willing to meet up. The power noodle is my go-to setup for crappie on the river.

Tb rods are second to none except one that fits into your budget. If your budget is tight the JM will do just fine. If you can stretch the extra dollars you would not be disappointed with the TB. actually you might not ever go back to anything but TB after that.

All the rods you mention are a bit differnt than each other. The best bet would be to get your hands on all them and decide based on your experiences and preference.

The JM meatstick is a great rod, very fast with a super soft tip. The only knock is the tip can be delicate. A nice price though too...

The TB power noodle is super. Similar in bite detection but a much diff action than the MS. It has a slower longer soft tip that flows into a solid backbone...

The TB panfish sweetheart is by far my favorite rod all-time. All around panfish rod with plenty of guts for anything that comes along. Plus will handls good sized lures and on down to the lite stuff. Pick up a TB spring that comes off and on to be even more versitile.

Lots of rods out there that are nice. HT's polar lites and golds are a solid rod, St' Croixs have thier fans and are nice, Gander makes some good rods. Frabil, Genz, ect...

Handle a bunch and make a choice. Info and advice is great but rods are personal... cool

TB rods are the finest built rods that I own period! I have caught many species and sizes of fish with my 11 yr. old panfish sweetheart. I also enjoy my custom meatstick and my St. Croix Legends but I never leave home without my TB Power noodle and Panfish Sweetheart. Like Dark Cloud said it's personal..

For what you are describing, I'd go with the meatstick or powernoodle. It all depends on your budget and the cost of the reel you will put on it. I just ordered my first meatstick so I have no input on it. I own a powernoodle and it is a fabulous rod, and will be putting in an order for one of their Quiversticks as well.

I have used and own most of Thorne Bros rods and the Mitchell line. Honeslty, the Mitchell line or rods will catch one just as many fish and will be much easier on your pocketbook.

The Thorne Rods are nice but they are very expensive. I have a TB deadstick that was like $90.00 and my Mitchell was $30.00.

They are a bit different but both will get the job done.

All depends on just how much one wants to spend on a rod to catch a fish when the other less expensive one will do the same job.

I's say go to a sporting goods store and check out the rods they have. Most rods are junk but all 3 big name stores here in Fargo carry JM and St. Croix ice rods. Not too many people seem to give the croix's a chance but they're a sweet rod for a good price.

My opinion on St. Croix vs Jason Mitchell (own both of these):

Performance: St. Croix

Durability: Neither (my experience would give a slight edge to SC though)

Price: St. Croix

Customer Service: JM is the best I've seen.

Thorne Bros. custom rods are in a league of their own... but so is their price.

As my budget is thin too, since I am a broke college kid, I plan to pick up 1 or 2 jason mitchell rods myself. I see they offer the combos on the HSOforum. I was just wondering how the reels on the combos are?

Thanks

I was in your boat once...that's why I have so many cheap, crappy rods that I just want to get rid of. Looking back, even though I didn't have a ton of money, if I would have invested all the money I've spent on cheap gear and got the good stuff right off the bat, I'd be set. No starting over. No worrying about upgrading. Once you have the best, all that's left to do is fish!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
