Vikes and Childress working on extension

By Mark J. Miller

The Minnesota Vikings and head coach Brad Childress are apparently working out a contract extension for him, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The agreement will likely be realized sometime in the next few weeks.

This would explain why the agent for Childress, Bob LaMonte, was at the Vikings game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Unless he just wanted to see a good game, of course.

LaMonte reportedly met with owners Zygi Wilf and Mark Wilf and vice presidents Rick Spielman and Rob Brzezinski before the game for about five minutes on the field.

If that's the way these guys are handling negotiations, it's gonna take longer than the next couple of weeks to work out a deal.

With any luck the Vikings organization will put a clause in Chili's contract extension that will require him to release that favorite lap dog of his, T Jack, before the beginning of next season.

With Favre most likely hanging them up after this season, there is nothing but mediocrity in the future for the Vikings unless they turn Jackson loose and hit the free agent market for a workable QB which T Jack is not at this point. If they don't find a serviceable QB after Favre leaves everyone will once again be calling for Chili's head, just like they were last season, after Chili dusts off the "three yards and a cloud of dust" playbook for T-Jack next year. It will be the same thing we've heard the past few years as the Vikings struggle to win the division due to poor QB performance.

If there is any one reason NOT to extend Chili's contract it is that he kept Jackson around this long which shows poor team development and management looking forward.

It's obvious Chili is pushing to get this done now since they're 6-0 and everything seems to be heading in the right direction. His stock is high right now and he wants to cash in before they get into the meat of the schedule and things may or may not be so rosy after those games as they are now.

Put the extension in the drawer for now and lets see what happens when they actually play some tougher opponents. Baltimore was one, but that's been about it so far, not to mention they got the luxury of playing them at home and benefited from a shanked FG to get the win they really shouldn't have.

I think Favre will play next year. I see no reason why he wouldn't if he can stay healthy...that being said Chili should get the highest coaching contract in NFL history just for his lead role in bringing Favre here...Pure Gold in every aspect!

I hope a young Dan Marino falls into our lap next year if Favre retires but thats not realistic so with T-Jacks obvious vast improvement I'd have no problem with him being the guy...I can handle whining about the whiners another year while we see if T-Jack can do the job. And if he fails I'll admit it unlike some of you we can't admit anything to the contrary...

I say sign Chilli now before Chilis agent uses the NFL coach of year card after the season.... smile

Let's say Favre is one and done...what's any other coach going to do with TJack that Childress can't do. Same problem different coach? Why? Makes no sense. I say sign him now...get it done with and let him worry about making a run this year.

I like the way this whole group of Vikings management has brought in players(trade and FA), drafted, and has continually shown improvement each year. That, in my book, deserves to be rewarded. Take a look around the NFL right now...man, there are a lot of trainwrecks for teams out there. Let's just be happy we aren't one of them.

Next years Q-Back situation will play out in time. As we all know, if the Vikings really value a certain player they will make every attemp to go out and get him.

I like the players Chili's regime has brought in but keeping Tjack is doing an injustice to normal minded Minnesota Viking's fans.

Let's keep him but get a decent offensive coordinator that calls the plays, and get rid of Frazier and his terrible defensive scheme!!!

Well, last time I looked, Sharper was leading the league in picks with 5 with the Saints. Sharper was always very critical with Fraziers schemes and I'm sure he's loving life right now.

Although Sharper wasn't a huge run defender, he played his POSITION very well and turned those outside runs back to the middle where E.J. and the pursuit would close hard.

i like stability at the head coach position... chicken before the egg kinda thing. does stability make a coach better, or does a good coach lead to stability? either way, when there's stability, the whole team is better year after year.

Just ask the Tennesee Titans about stability grin

Yeah.... It's making all the difference for them this year, isn't it?

Wait till after the season. So what if he wins coach of the year and we have to pay him more than if we'd sign him now.

If we pay him now and the season heads downhill (we all know the potential is there, whether we admit it or not), that's a helluva lot more money wasted and we're stuck paying for egg-head another pile of years (whether he gets fired or not).

Before this season I would of said no way, get a new coach in here and let them do something right with this team. But Chilli really has helped this team progress year after year. This year he happened to have a Hall of Fame QB drop in his lap, but that only helps his cause. As far as the Vikings drafts have gone, I think they have done a pretty good job at bringing in some decent kids and will continue to do so. I also hope they keep going out every year and bringing in a few good free agents and making sure that we can at least put out a formidable team year after year instead of a one year run then rebuild.

I don't think Chilli deserves an extension yet.

The Vikes were 8-8 the year before Chilli got here, and that was coming out of the Red McCoombs era of bargain basement coaches and players. I think the Wilf's and their willingness to open up the payroll and bring in better talent has a lot more to do with the Vike's current success than Chilli's coaching.

Under Chilli they sure seem to be running a better organization and he's made some good draft picks (and he got Farve here) so give him credit for those things ..... but the way he's run his offense and the way he put TJack out there when TJack clearly wasn't ready are big strikes against him. Even now I think Farve has everything to do with the success of the offense and Chilli has very little to do with its success. And some of the best parts of the defense -- the Williams Wall, EJ, Winfield, etc. were here before Chilli got here.

I think it'd be better to see more improvement than a 6-0 run against some mostly bad teams, and some post season success, before he gets an extension.

Just ask the Tennessee Titans about stability grin

Seriously do guys even follow football? I'm under the impression you guys think this is Madden on the X-Box!...

One of the best coaches and most recent stable organizations in football.

This is one of many reasons why Knee-jerk panic reactions by mis-informed fans puzzle yet amuse me to no end....

Thats interesting Perch especially coming from a reasonable level headed thinking person like yourself.

I guess my take is the head coach gets too much credit for Winning and too much of the blame when the players play poorly and the team loses...

We're 2nd in NFL in scoring and people are still complaining about the offense I guess thats human nature but Sheez-Louise!

Pot meet kettle!

I'm sorry Leach I forgot how much you watch and follow the game forgive me and the Viking organization for doing an injustice to all you SMART NORMAL MINDED fans that follow and watch the game!

Yeah maybe we should bring an offensive coordinator in here so we can be number 1 in the league in scoring offensive instead of number 2. Heck you could probably do a better job!

Good one Leach!

My apology's!

Hey, I was referring the the normal minded people(the ones that don't have Jackson up on a pedastal and pegged as an elite Qb like yourself.)

We sure wouldn't be 2nd in scoring with that moron behind center. When you realize that you might gain some credibilty for your statements, so quit patting yourself on the back Pier.

Who are you to ask a question like that?

Yes, Fisher is one of the best coaches in the league, and yes, the Titans are one of the more stable organizations in football.

Yet they are struggling mightily this season without out a large amount of personnel changes from last year's winning team.

Simply put... someone said don't fire Chilly because it will create organizational instability. And someone responded with the comment about the Titans to point out that organizational instability isn't always the answer.

Then you go off questioning everyone's football knowledge.

Talk about knee-jerk reactions.....

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
