What if you discovered a hot new bait/pattern

I'm relatively new to the forum and check in now and than. As most musky fisherman do we tinker in hopes of coming up with a hot new bait or pattern. My question is this, what if you discovered something new that for right now is very hot in terms of putting fish in the boat. Would you keep it to yourself or would you try and capitalize on it and make some money.

Well you can't "sell" a pattern, so you must be talking about a lure.

I think it would be very, very difficult to market a lure where you could make a lot of money right now.

There are just too many lure companies out there, many of them doing basically the same thing.

I'd keep it to myself and a few buddies. Having a "hot" lure that everybody and their mother isn't throwing is priceless.

I'd capitalize, and hopefully give myself that push to starting a company that actually is profitable. I've always thought it'd be fun to sell lures, if not for a living, at least for a profit. I'd get satisfaction out of seeing customers catch fish on my lures!

Haven't heard of the coot. Sounds interesting. Kinda like that chicken bait video on this thread.

50inchpig, you are right. It is a modification one that I don't think anyone could really capitalize on with but it is producing fish. It's the little things. I guess I could make a bait but for now I think I will just enjoy the rewards.

Since modifying a bait, I have had unbelievable success. Multiple fish outings. I've been chasing musky for about 30 years so maybe it's not the bait but I kinda think so.

I'll share in the future but for now I'll see how it goes. Just wanted others opinions.

Also, has anyone ever noticed how some baits get better the more beat up they get. I had one bait I called the crow. It was a windels harraser that I added an extra bucktail to and the smaller the trailer became, the more big fish hit and followed that bait.

DJ -

I like your style. I'd agree with the rest of the crowd. If you do share, I'd start with a VERY small group to make sure it is the lure and not something you're doing with it. BAsed on all the double 10's and big rubber flying around lakes these days I'd prolly consider a Cisco Kid crankbait pretty innovative!! smile

And 50, do I need to know the secret handshake to get in the network?

Good luck for continued success!!

You need people to think they need it and its magic (stupid humans LOL), I do believe the larger fish Ive caught and seen caught were had not because they were the next greatest bait deal but because they weren't and never will be, baits you cant buy at Cabelas or even Reeds.

If the bait does what you want it too and you have confidence it will catch fish, if it has something different about it that may help catch fish that have seen everything else and probably eaten it twice.

That's what's gotten me started in making my own lures wink

I have no idea what you are trying to say.
