ralph, i believe you are right. indiana does have lake whitefish, but i could not find anything about cisco in indiana

as for the species,

the mouth is to bass like to be a cisco, whitefish, or any shad i know of.

im sure its some type of herring, most likely a skipjack, since the mouth is very bass like, though alewife is a possibility as well (but the mouth seems to big for an alewife).

my guess, definately a skipjack

It actually looks like a herring or a whitefish to me. We catch herring all the time through the ice on Lake Superior and some whitefish on Lake Gogebic during winter months. With both the Herring and the Whitefish just like you said scales galore, it is a soft or firm fish?

the mouth is to big for a whitefish. it is some type of herring, definately not a tulibee (aka cisco, lake herring, etc)
