Turkeys out of state

Powerstroke

Recommended Posts

I know many people here have made hunts outside of the state. I know WI has already drawn their lottery.

I was thinking of trying to extend my season in another state or two that has more liberal permitting. Any thoughts or suggestions. I was thinking maybe Missouri, Nebraska or Kansas.

I know you can get a Black Hills SD tag over the counter. I believe NE and Missouri are the same. Kansas may be a draw but I'm not sure.

Tons of public land in the Black Hills. Not so much in Nebraska. EVERYONE turkey hunts in Missouri so permission will not be easy. There is a huge chunk of public land in the southern part of the state in the Mark Twain National Forest.

Others will weigh in on this I'm sure, but look at the websites of other states to get a better idea of what's available yet this year.

Good luck!

Unit 4 in Kasnsas is the only draw zone, the rest of the state is over the counter. But there is a lot of public land in all of NE, SD, Missouri and KS. It just takes a little time and research. I've been doing at least 2 states a year for several years now and at very little expense. As long as your ok sleeping in a tent for several days and possible not showering. But again it takes some time. i use a lot of internet searching and google earth to look at public areas. I do have to say the down side is that you never know how much pressure has been there so it really does become a run and gun game.

You can still get a a surplus tag from WI after they let people who where not drawn. There are plenty of tags and you can buy one till there gone.NE archery is over the counter so is the shotgun tags.Missouri OTC also.

I myself love the Black Hills and have been going for 7 of the last 8 years. And I am going again this year. If you do a little homework it is a relatively inexpensive hunt. Tons of public land and the tag is guaranteed. Any questions and i can try and help. I know there are a few others here that have been there but I can't say enough about the beauty and birds. I love it out there and can't wait till spring

I've hunted in the UP in Michigan and that was a lot of fun. Just over the border from Wisconsin... in fact there's a guy there that is great. Dean Hulce, he's out of Norway or Vulcan, can't remember - near Iron Mountain. He got us on so many birds it was unbelieveable. He had hunting rights on 7 or 8000 acres, we did a lot of running and gunning

I going to give Nebraska a try this year. I like the fact that the its one season (let's me be a little more flexable, if need be). You can buy the tags over the counter and up to 3 permits. There's a fair amount of public land and from what hear I its a little easy to get permission for private land then around here.

Turkey population is 150,000 birds, that's twice of mn population.

Both NE & SD are good close options. NE offers an archery season for the first 2+ weeks of the season which keeps the pressure down. Permits are available OTC up to 3. The farther west you travel, the more public land you'll find.

SD requires an application for prairie units (black hills is unlimited) but you can draw multiple tags there as well. There's also reservation tags available. My only experience has been in the black hills and it's a different hunt out there for sure. Worth experiencing at least once for sure. You'll see a ton of whitetails and depending on location, maybe some mulies and elk as well. The Gregory area along the Missouri holds a lot of birds as well but more privately owned land.

Like others have said, if you're willing to camp and have a decent know-how on birds, you can do an out-of-state hunt pretty reasonably. Great way to get a Merriam or Hybrid under your belt.

I just got the okay from the wife to go down to Florida (I get to hunt for 3 days and spend the rest doing the vacation)!

Have to do some homework -

Osceola's! I'm jealous.

I'm not worried about "qualifying" as I have my bowhunter ed card and a firearms safety card too because I've always planned on hunting out of state. I will be emailing a few of you. I have no problem camping anywhere. I've got all my backpacking gear at the ready and were are planning on buying a camper before spring so I might be able to travel with that instead.

What he said. I use it for many things like getting into MBRB and other specialty hunts as well as its flexibility as an advanced hunter ed cert for out of state hunting.

Most that take it do so because of MBRB. There were 6 last year that needed it because they were going to hunt Alaska, lucky b@*%*!s! grin

I just applied for my first ND spring turkey license here its done by lottery. 3 of us first timers failed to draw in the fall, i'm hoping I can get one this spring. I'm still trying to decide between shotgun or bow. I'm thinking shotgun.

DonBo, regarding over the counter turkey tags....this is right out of the South Dakota book: "Big game (turkeys are considered big game) are issued by application, availiable online at www.SDGFP.info.

You're right. For a Black Hills Turkey tag, you need to apply, but there is no deadline for the application and the draw is guaranteed.

dukhnt.....didn't we meet at MBRB once? Would you mind chatting about NE if I decide to head that way?

Yes we did. I really don't know much about NE but I could definately talk to my cousin if you had questions.

I was checking out the NE HSOforum and seeing the "turkey range" it pretty limited in that state based on the tree cover being mostly in the major river systems.

You do need to fill out an application for a tag in SD, but the tags are guaranteed. Its for a lottery, but just to actually approve the tag.

  • Your Responses - Share & Have Fun :)

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
