Spark Plug Questions - Lazer Mag

1. I read somewhere that they suggested using a CJ8Y spark plug instead of the CJ6Y in the StrikeMaster Lazer Mag Express because it supposedly sparks better. The manual calls for CJ6Y, can anyone confirm that I could/should use the CJ8Y? On the StrikeMaster web site it lists both but the CJ8Y says 2hp Techumshe (TC) and the CJ6Y says 2hp Techumshe (TMO).

2. When you buy spark plugs are they already gapped and ready to go or do you always have to adjust them?

I personally would recommend neither...go to a marine dealer, ATV shop, or an auto shop and Cross reference the CJ16 over to a like NGK..a better plug.

If you go to the NGK web site you can look it up for yourself if you wish.

Gap should be set as long as you do not alter it.

Im cant remember for sure but i think its a hotter plug than the 6. I forgot how the heat range works with champions.

I would stick with what strikemaster calls for, putting the wrong heat range in can cause damage.

Also, make sure you check the gap. Having worked at a auto parts store I can tell you that plugs' gap should always be checked. The way stuff gets banged around in shipping and in the hands of some employees stocking, its amazing that they dont come broken half the time. *Always check the plugs before you pay for them to make sure they aren't broken*

Higher the number, hotter the plug for Champions. Just the opposite for NGK.

There's no reason you should need to use a hotter plug if you are mixing the fuel correctly.

I would agree with changing over to an NGK plug. Bosch also makes good plugs, not sure if they make one for this application.

I have been running the CJ8Y in mine for a while now. It burns one step hotter than the CJ6Y and runs great. Cy up at the Strikemaster shop will recommend the CJ8Y. My buddy was just up there on Thursday evening and they put the 8 in for him. I don't know why they put the 6 in from the factory, but the 8 does work better.

Because the auger is run for very short periods, in cold temps, and normally not warmed before you start cutting, using a hotter plug isn't going to hurt anything. In fact because of all the above, you'll probably have less carbon build up in the engine and less plug fouling if you use a hotter plug.

What about those "Pulstar" plugs. Are they the real deal? They claim more power and efficiency. Thought I saw them at Menards among other places.
Don't waste your money. I think they would fall into the "Deer Whistle" category. I can't see how a spark plug can increase your horsepower unless you are replacing a worn out one with a new one. If all these "miracles" were so great the manufacturers would be fighting over them. Just my opinion.

Still running the same NGK for 3 years now without need of replacement in the old mag III. The motor had trouble starting and running under load when I acquired it and all that has changed is the spark plug and the addition of amsoil saber to the fuel mix. She's been running strong ever since. Better and more reliable than my buddy's brand new tough to start jiffy stx.

Yup...I'm on that NGK wagon too.

I roll-slide-drill with the NGK BPMR7A plug, better plug, hotter cleaner spark.

I also always run Sta-Bil Marine Blue Formula in my fuels, and run high octane fuel.
