Gun case bill

Recommended Posts

This is one of those things that folks aren't going to agree upon. From my perspective & experience it works to keep bad guys off the streets. It seems to me that this bill is simply an attempt to keep the gun issue on the front burner. Both sides of the gun issue profit from this because it keeps people involved and supporting a particular position.

My purpose in bringing up the issue of urban entrepenaurs who are packing was to give a broader perspective on the issue than just involving hunting.

Tom--thank you for your service. I can't imajine that being a prosecutor would be a very pleasent job. I understand your perspective also but I'm not sure the game and fish legislation should be used to get bad guys off the streets. I understand that your job used to be exactly that and you are going to use whatever means are legal to get the bad guys. Blackjack and I are just saying there needs to be some limits on government power and I really don't know where to draw the line.

The thread is about the gun case bill. You said the SD non-case law worked for you. You weren't compelled to ground pound your pheasants and it seems you didn't shoot your self. Why does it work in SD,resident and nonresident, but it wouldn't work in MN?

Okay, I see where you're coming from. If I had to choose, I would choose to have a case law for both states, I think it gives all hunters a bad name when ordinary non-hunting citizens see gun barrels sticking out windows and 'hunters' shooting out the window or hunters hopping out of the car and blasting from the road. Face it, a no case law makes that easier to do. Outlaws will still be outlaws but not requiring a case will tempt more people to shoot out of the window. Its like the old saying, 'good locks keep honest people honest'. Or 'good fences make for good neighbors'. Gun cases keep honest hunters honest.

I look at this issue as one of those "so what - who cares" debates.

In the grand scheme of things, I highly doubt if the proposed change would cause much if any disruption. We will always have those who try and convince us that the sky is falling and the end-times are near. They tend to rant the loudest, until everyone tires of an issue. Then they move on to the next battle.

Shall-issue permits were going to lead to Wild West shootouts and carnage on a grand scale. Remember?

Allowing the "assault weapons" ban to expire was going to lead to uncontrolled mayhem. Remember?

I understand Tom's point about the usefulness of the current law in dealing with urban "businessmen". However, my default mode is to demand more personal liberty for the individual, even at the expense of added danger.

Greater freedom and less governmental regulation and interference are the prisms through which I view politics, politicians, and current events.

here's a few other tid-bits on loaded guns in vehicles here in SoDakota. "No person may allow a firearm to protrube from a vehicle or a conveyance attached to it on a public road. However, a firearm MAY protrube from a motor vehicle when shooting at coyotes, jackrabbits, rodents, skunks, badgers, racoons, and red and grey fox.

Loaded firearms need not be fully encased and unloaded when using off-road vehicles on thier own land or land they lease or to persons with a disabled hunter permit but, does apply to snowmobiles or motorcycles.

Artificial light:

-- A landowner or occupant and one guest may use artificial light on his land year round to take jackrabbits, coyotes, red & greay fox, racoons, possums, badgers, skunks and rodents. Only firearms using shotshell or .22 caliber rimshot cartridges.

We can shine from a vehicle if there are no implements capable of killing game but, we cannot shine with hand held devices between Sept 1 and 31 Jan but, we can use headlites to locate animals.

As far as personal injuries here, and I'll stand corrected til I check, I can only recall 2 incidents that resulted in personal injury/death. I'm going to check on this figure Monday And, not being much of a bird hunter, I could not find anything in the book that said ground swatting birds is illegal. Additionally, I do carry loaded rifles (one in the chamber) in my pig-up with the saftey on and the bolt slightly ajar.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
