All the flashers that are out there these days are good units, it really comes down to what you want and how much you want to spend for it. All of the "entry level" flashers ---- whether Vex, Marcum, or Humminbird --- will get the job done for you.

You can check them all out and compare features and pricing here at Ice Flashers.

It depends on what fish you target most the zoom feature isnt available on the Fl-8, I would jump up to the Fl-18 or Fl-20, so you can have the zoom. I dont own a Marcum, but all of their models have the zoom feature, and are great products as well.

New unit...shoot for the FL-12, opt for the duel beam and you will not need the zoom, plus you gain the LP (Low Power) mode. The FL 12, or any of the FL series units, offers 4 season use capability, slap it on the boat come spring...back on the ice come winter..you will love it.

Used Unit....whatever "Good Deal" you can finagle on a Vex FL Series unit from the FL-8 SLT up to the FL-18, or if your really lucky, a deal on FL-20 Pro Pac.

Lots of guys upgraded from FL-8's this season to 20's, so some will part with them if they didn't hand them down to family or friends...that is very common too. Should be a few deals if you look and ask around on good used units.

Remember, as long as they are not beat to pieces, a Vexilar is 100% serviceable, today, tomorrow, and down the line. Repairs are reasonable, easily obtained, and fast through there customer service here in MN...so it will not go obsolete.

The FL20 is a great unit but plan on spending close to $500 for one just like you would for the Marcum LX5.

The dual beam is nice but thats another chunk of change to caugh up.

I have an FL8, two FL8SLT's, FL18, and FL20. The FL18 has the dual beam ducer and it's never been switched from the wider cone since I never fish water deeper than 30ft.

The zoom feature is nice but you don't have to have it unless your fishing deeper water.

What I like most about the Vexilar is the endless options with cases and soft packs and accessories. I was moving my ice fishing stuff out of the garage yesterday and stumbled across a Vexilar cup holder for the Ultra pack. What will they think of next?

You don't have to pay big bucks either for a good flasher. There are a couple sites you can find nice used ones for a fair price.

The ducers on average last about 5-7 years with normal use, at least thats been my experiance. Keep that in mind if looked for a used unit.

I was just doing some looking around, and Fish House Supply has the fl-20 ultra pack for only $425 and the fl-12 pro pack for only $300! That is practically giving them away! I would jump on that deal A.S.A.P. Who knows how long a deal like that is gonna last!

If targeting Panny's the FL-8/12 will work great (especially if under 20ft).

If you are going after bottom huggers (especially walleye/perch) and may commonly be in waters deeper than 20ft, I would recommend the FL-18 or 20. The bottom zoom is a big help IMO if you want to see them bottom huggers.

Vex ... great choice.
