Well I have an FL-8 that is over 20 years old and I have had it re-built twice in that time I plumb wore out the brushs on the electric motor inside of it. Mine is so old that it does not have the interference button on it so I just yell at everyone else that is fishing with me until they hit the right one and then we all get back to fishing. If I am not mistaken it was the first year that Vex took over with the three colors on the screen. I even use mine mounted to the trolling motor on the bow of the boat in the summer time. I just can not see me selling it when I have had this long. I know I need to step up and get the 18 or the 20 but man the money I have saved having not purchased the newer model, comes out to be alot over the years. Maybe they will something newer and better soon and maybe I will buy that one. We'll see, how it goes.

Later JD

Ok lets clear this "Cool Blue"

Just called Vexilar about it and heres what he said

The blue color is for people that are color blind or have trouble seeing the color contrast. The blue color will replace the green on the flasher. He also said that if you are not color blind the colors will seem duller, and does not recommend it for a person with normal eye sight

Hope this clears things up

I almost picked up an LX5 this year. With the economy the way it is I thought maybe I should just hold onto the $550. I've had my fl8 Genz for 4 years now and it works great. I doubt I'll ever get rid of my FL8. I might get a newer unit but I'll keep my FL8 for a friend to use or for backup.

It's interesting to see how far this sport has come. Twenty five years ago I made my own version of a "blue box" and mounted a Super Sixty to it with a cut down hockey stick holding the transducer. It worked just like the FL-8 without color. I still have that unit. Now have the FL-8... had it for years ...It works great.... I'm sure I will upgrade someday soon.

LOL Musky hunter ! My first ice box was a nail box (wood) with my lowrance mounted in it. A coax cable holder screwed to the side that held two aluminum arrows that telescoped the transducer ! smile

...I could have been rich I tell ya !

the thing i like about the 8 is it has a 30 ft mode that no other unit has . so if you are in 27 ft of water you dont have to have it in 40 ft mode like the other units and then the hole right side of the screen is pointless to get any separation. and the zoom does no good if fish are suspended higher...... ill keep my 8 until i have money burning a hole in my pocket.

Who did you talk to, exactly at Vexilar?

True, it is an aid to folks with color vision limitations, that is the Cool Blue Conversions basic design function. Yet it does offer a brighter color pallet for many non color limited users and it has been well received by many who do not have color limitations in the green band of light.

I know and work with Vexilar staff, and I would find it very difficult to believe anyone would say it limits visual acuity for people with non limited color vision.

It may not be appealing to some, and to some it may be less attractive then the classic color pallet. It can be a choice thing for some and a whole new vision for others due to color blindness, but it most certainly is not blurry or limited.

I recommended it as an option when one may need to rehab an older unit, an option not commonly or widely known of for a Vex, but will greatly aid many Vex users with CB and for others it is just a cool looking upgrade and a rebuilt and cleaned dial and brush assembly...what they would likely need anyway.

Curious...have you ever seen one in use?

Simple test..What Number do you see here?

OK

The test is simple.

The individual with normal color vision will see a 5 revealed in the dot pattern.

An individual with Red/Green (the most common) color blindness will see a 2 revealed in the dots.

If you have difficulty reading either number clearly, the Cool Blue would be a big help to you.

I asked about the Cool Blue upgrade at the ice show and

an engineer at the Vex Booth also told me that Cool Blue

was to aid color blind people. Did not recommend it if not

needed. Did not get his name. Left my Vex as is.

Hey Ed what if you can see both numbers in the picture? As I can see both numbers, does it mean anything?

Also does Vex have a photo of the upgrade cool blue on thier site? As I would like to see what it looked like before doing it.

Thanks JD

Ya my FL8 slt won't go away till it dies, which maybe my whole lifetime. I just can't get rid of something that has helped me catch so many fish. It like a old rapala, you don't want to loose it but it has caught so many fish you cant put it away. I think it would rather die in action than be replaced.

What the heck do I need if I see an 8??? Really, thats what I see, an 8. I've been looking at this for along time and no matter what I can't see a 2 or a 5, just an 8. I'm screwed.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
