Touching bait after smoking???

Ok, kind of a weird post but here it is. I started smoking cigarettes after a two years of quitting and wanted others opinions on handling bait after I smoke a cig. Do others think the chemicals in the cig. transfer to the bait(I think so) and turn the fish off or does it not affect them. I believe if you spill gas on your hands from the auger and handle bait it would turn the fish off. Others opinions/ideas would be appreciated.....BT

It has been said and written the carcinogens from cigarettes can be transferred to bait or jigs while tying or putting bait on. I believe it does. This may explain why the guy 6ft away catches fish in the house and I don't while I enjoy some chewy tobacky.

If that was the case, I would never, ever catch fish since I always have a big old stinky cigar going in the fishhouse, the cabin and the boat. I seem to catch as many fish as anyone else, and sometimes more. So maybe the fish like the smoke. I don't think it is possible to know one way or the other, so smoke 'em if you got 'em.

I think fish are intelligent enough to know the difference between a quality, hand made cigar and nasty, chemical laden cigarettes. wink

I have been fishing on the north shore for to many years now. Thing is to many times I have seen a lot of fish being caught in an area. But the guy in the middle would never even feel one. The guy smoke a lot. One day tried some wash towels on his hands and he started getting fish. Who knows.

I am starting to believe that scent does make a difference. I don't think women excrete nearly as much scent as some men. How many of your wives usually out fish you or come close just by having the rod leaning up against something and reading a book?

This year I hope to try some experiments with scent cover up.

Cigarette smell???? could be something too.

I do believe that some scents can effect how a fish reacts to the smell of the bait.

When it comes to cig smoke, I smoked for over 35 years and I have never had any issue catching fish. Many times I have fished with non smokers and I outfished them so, for me, it makes no difference at all in my years of fishing.

Yes, the cigs are bad for you, but it never effected my fishing success.

If you feel it might be a problem then you should have some soap a long and wash your hands. The one thing that I have seen was a person eating Frito's corn chips and did not wash after eating and the rest of us did. We were catching jumbo perch on Mille lacs one after another and he could not buy a bite and he had on the exact same lure and line weight. I asked him if he had washed his hands and he said no. He ended up catching up to us by the end of the day but there was a hour of prime fishing lost because of the oils on the chips. No matter what I eat I will wash or at least wipe snow on my hands and if I have a fish in the bucket I will hold him so I get the slime on my hands. I don't know if it helps but confidence is a big thing.

I quit 10 years ago on July 5 after 25+ years so it can be done grin

The scent of cigs on a bait. I guess it would be a personal opinion of some type. Kind of like glow vs no glow.

Back in the day our grandparents never had any of the fancy scent items, or in a matter of worrying about it.

I really think it doesn't make a difference

Like jimalm said it could or maybe it was just unluckiness of his buddy

I suspect anything on your bait that is not bait is not all that good...cigs, stogies, booze, coffee, deodorant, after shave, fuel, Cheetoes...ect.

A no scent wipe and/or a clean cloth is always a good plan before and after bait handling.

I often use a cover scent, like Dr. Juice "Walleye" on my hands before I start fishing. Then wipe dry and clean as needed on clean fishing towels. One for bait, the other just a dry off towel for basic use, snotty nose.....chin slobber ect.. smile

One should consider fish as sharp as a deer for scent detection, I suspect they are even more critical of unusual misplaced scent then most mammals.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
