Tricks and tips to get through that last layer of ice........

Make sure the auger is warm, the blades are sharp and don't bounce it or lean on it. Let the auger do the work. You should never have to lean on a sharp auger.

I also try to lift up on the auger a couple times during the drill to clear the hole of excess chips. This will also reduce the amount of stuff in the hole that your auger is trying to move when its time to break through at the bottom.

I went from a 20+ yr old jiffy to a brand new strikemaster this year. It's amazing how a well cared for machine CAN do it all itself.

yeah that last layer can be a pain. I never used a power auger much till this year. got a 10" strikemaster and one time the last layer it almost twisted the auger right out of my hands scred the crapp outta me, second time the ice was thinner than I thought and I almost fell right on top and it went thru and into the water pulled right over lol. Now I really plant my feet and hold on tight let er buck!

Use care when handling gas augers with the blade guard removed. Think of the blades like the blades on a shaving razor device, if they get bent, even a little, the cut is going to be off. I have seen the "run and gun" types get to a fishing spot, and they are so intent on drilling 30 holes in a line between them and shore, fun to watch them smack the auger blades onto the ice as they catch their breath-- set the auger down SOFTLY on bare blades, and then, only to cut, not to "rest". ONe "bonk" on the bare ice or your garage floor, etc., with exposed blades, and the angle can be thrown off- the blades will be sharp, but the angle will be wrong- and you cant see it by looking at it...

Simple; let the auger warm up before drilling and make sure your blades are sharp. A minute or 2 of warm up is all it takes. Don't push down on ANY shaver style auger; just let the auger's weight and the blade pitch pull itself down. The only thing you are there to do is start it, hold the head steady, gas it, and turn it off when done.

Im finding myself having to almost put all my weight to get my auger to keep cutting ice this year. Didnt have to do that last season. I realize now this is probably just hurting the problem. Is the problem just dull blades, or have I somewhere along the line bent the angle of the blades? Maybe both?

This Advice was very helpful to me. I had to learn to let the auger do more of the work. I have been having trouble on the last layer of ice as well, with my first power auger. If i go right for it i start to lose throttle, then if i pull up it kicks back in. warming it up really has helped me (but can be hard when you are anxious to fish smile )

Letting her warm-up is crucial. If you don't do this the auger simply won't perform at it's fullest potential. Once she's all warmed up I just make sure she grabs nice and straight and give er' some gas....With the final 2 inches I like to clear my shavings by lifting up a few inches and let the excess shavings clear from the flighting. Then I firmly set her in place again and she grabs right on until she breaks through. Then make sure you shut it off after each hole....hope that helps. Lazer Mag 10" here. Once I figured out how she likes to drill, she's been great. wink

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
