8 inch or 10 inch

I like the 8. Haven't seen anything I can't get out of the 8 inch hole and your foot won't fit down it. I've fell into 10 inch holes others left behind and I worry about kids out there with those size holes. That's my personal prefference anyway.

I had a 10" auger as well. I just preferred the extra clearance for guiding fish through the ice.

If I had to do it again, I'd go with an 8. Stepping through a 10" hole and hyper-extending a knee wasn't fun.

Depends on what you are using it for. I have both. If you are tip up fishing or fishing out of a perm for a few days get a 10".

The holes you drill freeze from the outside in, if you have tip ups out all night in an 8" hole they will be frozen in by morning. My 10" is not running atm and it is driving me crazy.

Same thing with the wheelhouse, the holes just take longer to close.

You do not need a 10" if you just plan on panfishing or walleye fishing from a portable.

The area of a circle is calculated by multipling Pi (3.14) times the radius of the circle squared. A 10 inch auger has 78.5 square inches of surface 3.14 X 5 X 5. An 8 inch is 50.25. A six inch is 26.26. Now without getting to far over my head, it would seem that the most logical size would be the smallest that will get the job done for you. The 10 inch is cutting almost three times the ice as the 6 inch. That's a lot of slush unless you plan on pulling out a fish with a girth of more than 19" (6 inch auger) 25" (8 inch auger)or 31.4" (10 inch auger.

You could also use the formula my Uncle Jack used when buying shoes. He always said he wore a 10, but 11 felt so good he bought 12's.

I've had both, 8 was just fine for the 13# eye my dad caught and for a day of fishing. One day. In our perm or the wheelhouse where you might be in the same place 2 or more days ..... 10 is the only way I'd go!

If you use it for tip ups you really gotta watch your step, but in a perm or wheelhouse the hole in the floor is bigger than 10.

Only real world experience I've had with a 10" involved my foot getting really wet mad

A bigger hole makes it easier to get the fish's head to come up the hole but if they get off in the whole it also makes it easier for them to make a quick u-turn.

I think its all what you want and like, and/or if you are using a hand or power auger. I think that if you have a power auger, a 10 is nice...lots of room for the vex and pulling any size fish through. If a guy has a hand auger...6 is nice just because it is easier to auger the hole. I use a 8 inch nils master and I like it. I like how the 8 inch because it is not too much to auger and it is still big enough to pull a decient size fish through.

Just had to get my 2 cents in. smile

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
