Oneida lake ice

Recommended Posts

Telephone wire and poles is a good thing if you are providing telephone service. Are you implying that iceman may be overdoing it a bit with his "ultralight" equipment? gringringrin

All kidding aside, like AW said, right place at the right time. We initially marked fish that would't bite and it looked like it was gonna be a tough day. Then slowly started to get more and more action. Moved exactly 3 times and not huge distances apart, maybe 50 to 75 yards each time. All together 6 nice walleyes in about an hour and a half is pretty good. I simply think we happened to be there when some active fish were coming through. About a week or so ago we fished in front of the bathouse at SB and all we managed was 2 perch and no walleyes. Same lures, bait and techniques so who knows?

As far as time of the day we walked out and set up when it just was starting to get light enough to see. Didn't pay strict attention to the time but probably around 6:30 to 8:00 or 7:00 to 8:30 is when we fished.

Ahhh Yes!!! LMAO on the telephone poles and wires.. I have down sized to Fence posts and electric wire. On a more serious note. Usually if Im fishin that lake in the am I try to be unloaded and one my way to the ice by 630. Seems 9 X's out of 10 im on the perch all morning. Cant seem t get the eyes. From what I see I use very similar lures. Jiggin raps, side winders, Kastmasters yada yada yada, all with minner heads and mousies at times. Just my luck I guess. I have to agree with AW. When Im on my own I seem to catch fish. Other than the first time he and I went out this year, If I go out with anybody else its a bad day as far as fish go..

I hear yah!!!! Never fails, you do real good one day and invite friends to join the festivities the next day and what happens? As you know, the Big O is a tough lake to crack. The winter walleye fishery seems to be hit or miss. Like I said did great yesterday and a week or so ago it was a totally different story even though we had gotten good reports on that area. Last year the walleye winter bite seemed more consistent. I didn't fish as much as I wanted to but my buddy and his friends did well quite a few times. We fished edgewater alot and then moved further south towards out in front of Sylvan beach and did pretty well on a number of days. This year it seems a lot more spotty. Many theories on why, Sort of like Erieville - a number of theories on why it is so bad this year compared to others. Who knows what the real reason is other than its hard to catch perch down there this year.

I'd like to try Lewis again before the wheather changes but don't know if I can make it out there tomorrow or not. From your response you're on the lake plenty eary enough - I think its just being in the right place at the right time. You can have the best of equipment (yes, even custom made telephone poles),the best of lures, the best of electronics (did someone wisper "Marcum" smile and the best of bait (buckeyes) but if fish are not under you it doesn't matter. A good fisherman can entice "negative" fish to hit when things are difficult but no matter how good you are you can't make fish that are not there hit. So as good as we are and are equipment is, there still is a lot of luck involved.

Well I went out off Chapman Park today. The least amount of ice I came across was 8" and the most was 15", the walking is a piece of cake and the fish are there in #'s. Would've stayed out later but I have a guy coming to buy my basket case 4-wheeler, also selling my custom motorcycle. Needed to sell these so I can pay for my new to me 21' Sport Craft Cuddy Cabin Cruiser for my open water fishing fun. I will be back on the ice Saturday and Sunday for sure!! Anybody want to team up, or would any one mind if I tagged along??

Walleyeboy I'll be there about 5:30-6, wanna see what these fish do before the sun comes up. Also was out in front of Chapman for 5-6 hours today and came away with a total of 3 Perch and 3 Eyes (biggest eye was 14.5"). Kept the Perch and lost a big eye at the hole (he got caught at the edge of the lower part of the hole and when I let just a little pressure off away he went). Marked alot of fish, but hard to get any takers.

Buddy went out today and just slammed them, between him and his buddy they ended up 10 short of a double limit and most of the fish pushed over 11", he's getting 2 of them mounted that went 14" that were just HUGE. He sent me the pictures and I'll try and post them but I'll have to photo his face and background. Figures the one day I decided to play nice and stay home and be the good guy. OH well.......
