prov1900
4" on late ice. Every step you took, water would come up through other people's holes. The ice wasn't honeycombed yet, but it was the last day of the ice season for sure. Open water two days later.
Neighbor_guy
I have been on less than 2. Now it is 4 or better. I dont care how good the fishing is, it is not worth the risk anymore. To many responsibilities.
toughguy
The mental picture of seeing how thin it is gets me everytime! No kidding. Seeing fish, weeds and anything else down there everywhere you walk is a trip for sure. The pic in my avatar was about 4" of clear ice a few years ago. I was so cool to see the fish come up and ride along the top of the ice before they got to the hole. It's wierd how a dusting of snow can make you feel at ease. When there are parts of clear ice covered with a dusting of snow I find myself walking on the snow as if it's somehow safer than clear ice. In fact the clear stuff is stringer. WinterHaven
I really don't like to be on ice unless it is at least 3 inches thick.
Gissert
I'll walk on 3 inches of good, new, clear ice. I'll start pulling a portable on four.Any snow inclusions or milky ice, I steer clear until it is 5-6 inches. I fear late season ice much more than new, clear ice. BigWadeS
for me I would say 6", but I'm a wuss and I go 6'5" 340, so I usually wait to hear from many that it is safeRiver fishing is a blast just started that last year and can't wait to do it more this year
shizzy
Im a wuss and that popping noise the ice makes freaks me out still. I can watch a guy drive by in an F350, but it still gives me the shivers. 12" or more is my rule.
