Double cowgirls

Recommended Posts

whats the deal with these lures? I've been fishing musky for many years and have never used one let alone even seen one...why are so many people crazy about them? I'm sure they catch fish (like any lure I own) but why are they so special...Is this another weagle episode? Or are they really that good? I'm a huge skeptic so lets hear why they are everybody new favorite lure...

People like them because they work. I have probably seven of them. I have said before that I don't like them as much as the double showgirl, which is a smaller, easier to cast/retrieve version. I'm not convinced that cast all day, a DC will catch more fish, or even bigger fish than a double showgirl. Night is probably a different story, however. But I'm one of the few that has never actually landed a Muskie with a DC and we got a 46", 48", 52" and a 54" on the double showgirl last year. My evidence is anecdotal, but real enough that I'll save myself the wear and tear most of the time. I don't know that they're any better than the other Double 10s out there, either.

The Double cowgirl was one of the first inline spinners with twin #10 Colorado blades. The saltwater tinsel/Flashabou skirt to me is what set it apart. There is no denying that it is an awesome bait. Roll it slow and get a thump thump thump thump action or burn it as fast as you can.

Right now there are alot of bait companies making big inline spinners with twin #10's. Llungen, Figure 8, Bucher, Windels and alot more.

Musky Mayhem has some very aggressive marketing so I am amazed that you haven't seen them. They are everywhere! I even here the clank clank clank in my sleep. Those who throw them know what I mean.

A Pink/Pink is what caught me my first one last year... Cowgirl is my hottest lure in 2007...

At my last count... I have 16 Double Cowgirls... with plans of getting at least 4 more this summer... along with having a Super Cowgirl with plans of getting 6 more...

They are excellent and very versatile... They can be trolled... burned at high speed... rolled very slow... day or night... windy or calm...

The only downside to using Cowgirls are reels burning out so people are reverting to Abu 7000's, Shimano 700TE's, Shimano Trinidads, Daiwa Saltist, etc etc for Cowgirls...

Like 10,000 said, Musky Mayhem did a very agressive advertising... and from what I know... in 2007, Cowgirl caught over 250 muskies that were 50" or bigger... this count increased to over 320 for 2008... I dont know any other lures that would be able to boast this number... and the Cowgirl craze seems to be growing each year...

They just flat-out work!!! Pretty much all guides I know personally would have at least one cowgirl in their arsenal...

Im not hearing what 10,000 is describing... but I sure can feel their thumps in my hands while I sleep... thump thump thump thump...

I've stuck to other bucktails up until this point. I did finally cave and bought a chartreuse one. We'll see how it goes. I really have to like a bait before I'll go out and buy it in different colors. Really it just fills my void in chartreuse in my tackle box. IMO fish are either targeting an action and could care less about the color, or they are looking for a color and could care less of the action.

There's something about the blades that really gets them going, no doubt. I wasn't on the bandwagon until a won a few a club meeting last year. All I know is what I've seen and I believe that these blades can trigger fish and keep them interested when others won't, especially at boatside. I think some of it's visual and some of it is the water movement created behind the blades, cause these things make fish HOT. I still use other bucktails in some situations too but a double 10 is one of my main baits now. There is no better bait at night, even if it does sound like you're stuck in the middle of a cowbell parade.

Nick was also skeptical when the season opened, weren't ya Nick? The Purple Monster made a believer out of him. Nobody wants to cave in and follow every trend that comes and goes but the double 10s are the real deal.

Then there was that one night they would only eat the light colored ones - weird - we'll save that for a different thread.

Rebel........if you can't hear the sound that 10,000 is describing, just listen to the video that Musky Mayhem put out. That's right, don't watch, just listen. Or hang a couple of DCG's in the wind for a moment and listen to the calling of the blades. I am sure at any one time on Mille Lacs, you can hear it from one side of the lake to the other!!! \:\)

Can you save a reel from burning out if you pump the rod and reel up slack vs. a smooth retrieve -or do the muskies like a steady retrieve? Anybody have any trouble with C4's with high speed gearing? Thanks, Hans.

kinda hard to do if we're both deaf... so we'll just go by the thump, thump, thump feel ;\)

Bret... Quack said it the best... Born deaf, and I come from a deaf family (deaf parents, deaf grandparents, and my own son is deaf)... Dont worry about it!!! I can imagine how intense it is since I can feel the vibration coming from the rod handle... Hmmm maybe if I hooked my DVD up to an intense stereo system (got a friend who's a DJ so I could ask him) and cranked the volume all way up... but then again I dont think the neighbors would like hearing that... talk about trying to get on others' nerves just like that grin.gif

Hanso... I started the 2007 season with a 6600C4... didnt like it... Felt like I was reeling a DCG through thick mud... took it back and exchanged it for a 6600C3... ahhh much better... I did have a power handle on it... and it didnt help... so I wouldnt even recommend a C4 when reeling DCGs...

Hey Reb,

Definitely take the oversight as a compliment! Your writing skills and command of the language and communication skills despite not having the audible phonics are incredible quite honestly! To do that with all the funky muskie lingo impresses me more, I don't even know what half this Sumo Wave Walker, Stump Thumper, Vibrax, Zircom/alloy, graphite composite, Mojo, Tsunami stuff and slang means! grin.gif

Back to the topic at hand: I like the Mojo Double XX bucktails a lot, the maribou really pulses and those blade really thump too. There is more to life than just the Mayhem flashabou craze. Don't get me wrong, I'll be using the double 8 bladed Showgirls, nice illusion of speed and size in a less arm testing & tiring presentation.

Point is, in the 10s don't overlook the Mojo Double XX.

Reb, whatever you've done with education, it shows, I'm really impressed with your knowledge and how you share it! Thanks for all you do here......much appreciated.

I do know you'd like fishing in my ride, I have a 8' Bazooka subwoofer in the floor under the bow seat along with 4 more Marine Audio speakers, you'd be feelin' the THUMP THUMP THUMP of the stereo for sure!

My bad Rebel......wasn't thinking when i posted. I already knew that you were hearing impaired.....again, sorry.

CJAC is write....the way you write and post, I tend to forget. Wish I had the knowledge of all the lures you do. Course getting them big packages from Aaron at MTO will help the knowledge base quite a bit, eh?

Chris... thanks... Im humbled actually... I've picked up so much on this site, so Im giving more back... as for your ride... sounds like the vibration could be intense if cranked up enough... Just hope your eardrums dont blow!!! Just let me know when and I'll be game!

Bret... I already said "Dont worry about it" so its all good... now all the political correctness B$ aside, it happens often and theres no point in getting pi$$y over it... I am not offended at all when someone forgets that I am deaf... and Im not even offended when someone uses "deaf" or "hearing impaired"... just that I prefer "deaf", not "hearing impaired"... again, no worries there... I know some people would prefer to be called "hearing impaired" but to be honest with you, you'll find that more people would rather to use "deaf"... my point of view is that all deaf people arent "impaired"... there is a well-known quote in the deaf community, "we, deaf people, can do ANYTHING... except hear"... so that pretty much sums it up... but thats just me...

As for the knowledge of lures... Im still learning more... I still need to use more... I need to experience more... Theres a limit to what one can learn while cruising through all those retailers' websites and the forums, one do need to go out and use them, having a big diverity of lures in one's tackle box... but then again... my knowledge that I share is limited to what I have used, which isnt very much, along with what I have picked up on others and passing on... Just buying them doesnt really do anything much except making a guy drool LOL... but talking about them, using them, etc etc helps whole lot...

definitley true!!!!! ok, back to double cowgirls! \:\)

I have a couple of them, plan on buying a few more. I like em..Thye are a little tough reeling them with my 65000 C3 reels so I'm gonna make a jump to the 7000 and that should be much easier to reel these DCG's. I have not had much action on em yet but hopefully that will change this upcoming season.

Yeah Quack... Cowgirls are just like potato chips... many cant stop at one... LOL... I just pray it wont be the same for me when it comes to the Super Cowgirls... Im already running out of storage space...

I know I have 2 Abu Garcia 7000iC3's but lately I've been having this nagging feeling that I should go ahead and invest in a Shimano Trinidad TN16N... or a Diawa Saltist... just keeps on nagging me more often than I'd like... Im just waiting for more reviews on both reels... I figger that it wouldnt hurt to have one... I could use the 7000 for night fishing when its best to really SLOW-roll the DCGs and the TN16N for daytime to really BURN the DCGs...

The effectiveness of the DCG and other double bladed bucktails arises from the massive amounts of vibration and flash that are produced with stimulates both lateral lines and visual cues that trigger fish. DCG no doubt work all the time, but other baits can be just as effective. Any of the double bladed bucktails are great fish catching baits.

Like everyone has posted they have the ability to wreck reels. I personally use Daiwa Lunas and Calcuttas and have not had a problem. I am gonna try a shimano torium this summer to these dbl bladed beasts, future feedback coming.

My suggestion get a few (less than 5) double bladed baits test 'em out and if you like them then expand if not there are other tools in the arsenal to produce muskies.

Dano, Defienitly let us know what you think of the Torium.... I was thinking about picking up that reel myself, but I am just gonna keep using a Tekota 600 till I hear more about them. Those torium's look like the ticket though. Really light...the 12 and 14 that is grin.gif

Rebel- Yeah I know, I'm just saying I'll get a 7000iC3 but I have been leaning to a Diawa Luna or Shimano Calcutta 400b but I'm looking at fishing maybe 2-3 days a week so the 7000iC3 may suit me better, or just for now til I start catching fish!

And yes, muskie lures get addicting that we want more, just like decoys in waterfowl hunting!

what about Shimano 700TE??? I havent heard one peep about this reel... Priced the same as a Trinidad yet has 4.7:1...

Yeah Quack... those 7000's are reasonably priced and the service is excellent... When my 2 6600C3 blew out... the turn-around time was less than a week and half... If you want 7000 with push-button instead of lever release... they can usually be found on a well-known online auction site... I've seen several new ones... but they have different handles...

One thing to remember about the 7000's is that they are heavier (21oz) and bigger round. For me, I have bigger hands, so palming the reel isn't a big issue. My brother has smaller hands and can fish with my 7000 for a while, but then his hand starts to bother him (he is kinda a wimp...LOL). Once I fish with my 7000 for a while, and then go to my 6500's, they feel like a snoopy pole! But the 4.1:1 gear ratio and power handle just can't be beaten in my book.

I took mine apart this summer for some dumb reason, and broke it down way past my skill level. Sent it in to Garcia and had it back in under 3 days, all put back together and cleaned up. No charge. Can't beat customer service like that, eh?
