My boss and I got these ice fishing yesterday while fishing for crappies and sunnies. All were quickly photographed and released. The first one my boss is holding up is 20" and the biggest of mine is 18.5"

October 24, 1996 I caught an 8-0. She is hanging on my wall. I have 5 others over 6-0 caught throughout the summers. No specific months stand out for those - July through October.

Actually between DNR and Xcel Energy sampling since 1978 only 2.... one in 1993 and one this past year!!

Whats the age on an average 20 inch smallie?
Again using historic data and recent otolith cross sections.... up around 16 years old for fish around 20"

How long do smallies live?
Well in the literature the oldest recored was 26... So they can stick around for a loooooong time...

On the Miss the oldest recorded was 18.

Nice work Katoguy, that's a once in a lifetime MN Largey, but ya never know??? \:\)

Here's my poor mans mount, I found an image online and made it the same size as the 22 1/8"er I caught a few years ago. Leechs 22" repro looks great, maybe somewhere down the line I'll go that route.

Here's a couple of vids from the fall of '05 to get your juices flowing before the season opens. 6.0 lbs and 5.8 lbs.

Here is one of my best. Caught during a league night tourney. fish in my right hand measured 19.5 inches and the fish in my left measured 22.25 inches. Those two along with an 18.0 incher weighed 13.8 lbs. (We have a 3 fish bag limit) So I'm assuming the 22.25 was most likely approaching the 6lb range if not a touch over.

Here is a 18.75 inch Mille lacs Smallie and a keeper picture of my boy with about a 4 inch sunnie. Priceless.

Here is my personal best in Iowa:

IMG_0412.jpg

I've caught 3 in this size range, one in IA, one in Mn, and one in Mo. Mo one was the largest over 7lbs. and would of won me $30,000 in Big Bass Bash if only it was 2 days later. \:\(

Hard to tell from the pic but it doesn't look overly fat, I've seen some twenty's weighed and all but one were 3.9 to 4.3 lbs the other one was 5.1 but was full of spawn and probably would have been around 4 flat without. If it was a mIlle Lacs smallie at 20" it would push 5 easy, but a river smallie its probably more around 4.1 to 4.4.

Its a very nice fish for the river you caught it in, my biggest out of there is around 19"es I know theres big ones in there but they get pressured ALOT

It was done by Artistic Anglers out of Duluth. They did an awesome job. Even the pictures don't compare to the real deal. I ordered it at the Sportsman Show last year and got 2 bucks off an inch because I ordered it then. All together it was a little over 300 with driftwood and shipping.

I'm for sure doing business with them again!

I did a little photo editing to make a ruler for ya. ;\)

Again I don't want to seem like I am bragging, but at the same time I don't want to look like I am exageratting...

Your photo is very inaccurate.. considering the angles, editing and such...

Why do you want to prove me wrong?

Here.. and anyone feel free to try this at home... I printed the photo.. cut out the GPS right along the silver edge where it measures 6.25" and carefully marked out my photo.

The RESULT? 23 inches... close enough to my first estimate!

thanks river rat...i catch lots of 17-18 inchers and have one 19 incher (and then the 20), but they dont seem to get bigger. ive only fished the river for one year so im still fairly inexperienced..but im hopin to get one around 22 this year as i will have my boat in the water a lot more so i will be more mobile, and hopefully i will learn a lot more.

I know its just 'big fish story' stuff... but I really don't want people to think I was exaggerating. I wasn't. I don't care if I got the biggest fish or not... most important to me is numbers... i.e. true skills etc... I do not have large numbers.. just a nice smallie with beginners luck for that one.

And.. as they say... size doesn't matter... \:\)

The biggest smallie caught in my boat was caught by my mother...This monster trailed my topwater but turned and hit the lure my mom was using...It measured 21"...Caught it on Mille Lacs...I don't think she understands how rare a fish of this caliber really is...

Its funny now days people wont even believe pictures anymore they also always start looking for where it has been photo shoped! haha You almost have to bring the fish to the na-sayers and show them. I think these are all great fish Id love to catch any one of them!
