New Rig

I am looking for some advice. I just bought a used 2005 Lund pro-v with a 175 optimax I pick it up tomorrow. The only thing I am worried about is pulling this rig. I have a half ton chevy truck and I am sure it will be fine but has anyone else beefed up their springs or truck to support a bigger boat?? First time I have had anything this size??

You'll be just fine with what you have. Much of the weight is displaced to the trailer tires, so no worries. Drive it like ya own it and congrats on the new rig!

Ideally there should be less than 500 pounds of tongue weight, and if the boat trailer is set-up properly it'll be much less than that. You shouldn't have any suspension issues with the truck pulling your new boat.

I agree with Eric and Dan, as long as your trailer is set up correctly (and most of them are) tongue weight and the weight on your suspension should not be an issue.

Thanks for the welcome. I am probably just concerned about nothing it just is a lot bigger than the old 16' bench seat crestliner with the 6 horse johnson

I have a 2025 and pull it everyday with a 1/2 ton chevy, and it works fine and dandy...nice to hear you got the right kind of boat;)

Sounds like a nice rig.

The biggest concern when pulling a bumper pull trailer is stopping - as most of the weight should be on the trailer's axles.

So as long as your brakes are in good shape you should be just fine.

That and keep an eye on your tach on long trips. Make sure she isn't in and out on the overdrive. Have a blast that sounds like a great set up!!

I tow my tyee with a 1/2 chev no problem. Even with a fiberglass topper the back does not squat much at all. Just make sure the trailer is set up correctly and trailer brakes are nice.

How can you check the trailer breaks?? Are they similar to a vehicle??

You should be fine. If I had one concern it would be the 1/2 tom tranny as they are notorious weak. The best thing you can do to overcome this is to change the fluid allot. A friend of mine pulls a large camper with his 1/2 ton with no problems so far doing this.

First I would see if it has brakes on it - look on the coupler - if there's a extra cable with a hook on it (besides the safety chains) then it very likely has brakes. If the coupler doesn't look like your standard coupler, that's also a good indicaiton you have brakes on your trailer.

I BAUGHT A NEW 19.FT ALUMACRAT AND I PULL IT ALL OVER THE STATE WITH A CHEVY 1500. MY TRUCK IS STOCK AND IT PULLS IT WITH EASE. AND EVEN BEFORE THAT I WAS PULLING A 621 RANGER AND IT PULLED IT FINE. HAVE FUN IN THE NEW RIG

jhol, congrats on that rig!! I have a 07 1800 Prov with 175 opti and 9.9 pro. I pull this rig with a V/8 Dakota Quad. My trail is a Prestige dual axel with brakes so tongue weight and control is no problem. It does move me a bit on rough roads due to weight, but pulls just fine. You will have no problems with a 1/2 ton as long as the trailer has brakes.

I bought a new truck that has a tow haul feature. What weight should you engaged this? I will be pulling a 17' Lund Angler. About 2000 lbs with it loaded.

You can run T/H anytime you wish. With T/H activated the transmission shifts at higher RPMs to help get loads moving and not lug the engine in-between shifts. It'll still eventually reach overdrive, but at a higher speed than with T/H off. Using T/H revs the engine higher and in stop and go traffic this also helps keep the transmission cooler as well.

I used to pull a 219F Stratos with a 150 FICHT and 15hp kicker motor behind a four banger 1988 Toyota Fourunner across the U.S. and never had trouble towing it, stopping it from time to time was a bit sketchy but we always made it.

Just make sure the brakes are in good shape and spend the money each season to have them looked over or you will also park "inside the motel".

I had a 99 ProV 1800 with a 150 VMax and pulled it with a 95 Chev 1500 with the 350. I would be more concerned about having a 4X4 for pulling it up a ramp. If the ramp is gravel and somewhat steep there good possibility that you can spin the rear tires. The Pro V is a lot of weight to get moving especially if you have the livewells and fuel tank full.
