I won a gun! Do I keep it?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys --

I won a gun last night at the NWTF dinner in Moorhead.

It is a Rem. 710 bolt action 300 mag with a 24" barrel and a 3 shot mag box.

It also can with a mounted package scope -- Bushnell.

I am not excited about the scope, but should I keep the gun?

I had my choice to pick up wither that one or a 7mm model. I chose the 300 mag. I am not sure if that was a good choice or not.

I may be able to trade it in toward another gun but I would guess i would only get $200ish in a trade.

I DO NOT have an elk/moose gun and always planned on tryuing for the big game. I have a 30-06 for everything else.

Is this a good gun? Better to upgrade?

Please give me your thoughts.

Thanks

Hit

Congrats on winning the gun. Sure wish I'd win one sometime, hasn't happened yet though.

I like the caliber choice. I also have a .30-06 that I use for almost everything, plus a .300 win mag that I got for elk and bigger. When I got the .300 I was also considering the 7mm but decided I liked the .300 better because it was farther away from the .30-06.

I am not a fan of the Rem 710. I haven't paid much attention to it but I heard a lot of complaints about it after it hit the market.

Think I might trade it in -- the sales guy was talking about a Tika T-3 by Berretta or Remington 700 SPS --

Any thoughts out there on that?

If I am going to take a $40000 elk hunt probably shouldn't take a $300 gun?

I understand that the rem 710 is NOT considered a good guy by people.

Heard a lot of good things about the TIKA t-3's. The Remmy's are pretty good too.....pick them up at the store and see which one is the most comfortable. Of course your 30-06 will work for moose and elk as well.......

I agree on the 30.06 as it will work. The Tica line has a great line up of rifles all that I have seen or heard about dhoot very well.

Let us know where its $40,000 to hunt. Sounds a little spendy for a Elk hunt. Maybe New Mexico.

My personal opinion on the 710 is that if I was going on a $4000 elk hunt I would'nt depend too much on the Rem. with the Bushnell scope. The caliber is fine but the gun would be traded for a Tika.Should be able to get $325 for the Rem.I shoot a Tika in a 25-06 and love it.Shoots really well and is light.Just my thoughts.

never read a good thing about them......Field and Stream tried to paint a good picture of it earlier this fall, but Yeah, I would trade it for the TIKA T-3 especially if you are gonna be lugging it up mountains. Not to mention Hauling my AR-10 and Harvey Lee's 300 win mag

I used to run one of the busiest gun counters in Minnesota. I've never experienced a more problematic gun than the 710.

If you can find a buyer, take it. Sell it as unfired, and get something (anything?) else. There are many great rifles by Remington; the 710 ain't one of them......

maybe you could try and sell it on the For Sale forum on Fishing Minnesota. I would guess you would do better than a trade at a gun shop. Its kinda the off season but one never knows, or wait until august when you should get a little more closer to the hunting season.

Sorry to do this gents. Not really trying to be the spelling police, but Tikka is exactly as I spelled it-Tikka. I know, because I have two of those rifles.Tikka is a spin off of Sako, and for European-Finnish guns,Sako and Tikka are about as good as it gets for production guns.Tikka's changed a little bit when Beretta took over a few years back, but the action on those rifles is smooth.Same with Sako,in fact, Sako is a nicer rifle.Anyway, you can't go wrong with a Tikka T3.Trade up the Rem. 710.

I wish I would win somthing for once! lol...I've got the .300 Rem Win Mag 700 SPS Stainless. You won't be disappointed. I'm sure you've been told or read about it, but dont short yourself on the glass. Happy shopping! I wish I had your problem.

I have a T3 .300 short mag and really like the gun for elk. The short action on the bolt works well for me and makes for a fast followup shot if necessary. Congrats on winning a gun hitman!
