What transducer beam angle to get?

Get the 9 degree transducer, either by itself, or get the dual transducer that has 9 and 19 degree.Narrower cone angle will work the best at those depths for the lakers. If you get the dual, you can switch over to the 19 for shallower fishing, giving you more flexibilty. My FL-18 came with a 12 degree, but I sold it and use the dual all the time now.

For those depth's and other fishing, I would go with a dual. If you check around, they do have some deals. I heard today Vex. likes to keep prices in check, so you will not find a store with a $100 price difference, but do your checking and you will find you can find a deal.

Definitely the Dual in your situation. I typically fish 12-40 fow and almost alway use the 9 degree. Occasionally will switch to 19 if don't mark any fish with the 9, just to see if anything is close by. Might also be useful if I were to try to share the flasher between two of us sitting close togther if my partner does not have a flasher.

After to talking to the tech guys at Vexilar, I purchased a 9 degree transducer. He pointed out that because of the design of all transducers, they will mark the bottom as the nearest signal they read. If you are fishing on the bottom and there is a slope, even slight, the sonar will read the high edge of the cone, and the lower egde of the cone will be a dead zone where no targets (fish) will show up. Because of the narrow cone, a 9 degree will minimize this dead zone. If you can afford the dual, the 19 degree setting would be great for targeting suspended fish.
