Was up at the cabin this past weekend clearing some trees and listening/watching for turkeys. Every lake I drove by looked like they do in February. Didn't see Yellow Lake, but I did drive by Clam, Viola and Big Sand. Nobody out there but I had a hard time convincing myself it's mid April. Heard a few gobbles but they were pretty quiet due to the crappy weather.

Well, I know it's not what you guys want to hear but after a trip up to Yellow this past weekend, I found there is still easily 30" of ice with 3" of snow give or take. I've got a funny feeling there will ice on it on opener. But with the 1 walleye limit, you might want to consider a better lake. I'll be opening the trailer that we have by the Yellow Lake Lodge the last week of April. I'll probly be fishing on opener too, but for pannies probly.

Good luck guys!

I'll just be checking it out from shore. I thought I seen on my atlas there was a canoe access on the river as well. This is my 1st year with a WI license, so I'm just gonna be spending the day, driving from spot to spot scouting out places to fish for the rest of the season.

I know the smaller lakes around the area are going to be boatable, but I am not sure of the bigger lakes. I am hoping they will be though. Could find myself trying out Yellow if she's open. Good luck guys, and make sure to report conditions as we get closer. I will do the same.....

I talked to the campground owner and as of yesterday the only ice was on the south side otherwise the majority of the lake is open. It is still very low though. They lower it around 18"-20" in the winter. They will not begin to fill until the ice is completely off though.

The owner of our campground said her son was going to go down to the south end see if the ice was actual ice or just ice crystals. I'm going up this weekend and will let ya know how I do.

Had no boat this weekend not enough water in the lake. We fished in the channel and on the little yellow side of the yellow bridge in those dead weeds and ended up with 8 crappies.

The little lake was about 3/4 of the way covered with ice and the big lake had a large patch down from silver ridge into the south bay and up to the inlet. It outta be gone by tues or wed.

Walleyes were caught out deep 20+FOW cause the water is so cold it's only 39 on surface temp. So they haven't even came in to spawn. It'll be a while before things get where they should be this of year but until the next time I'm up,

good luck

Can't say I ever saw anyone in any boat land a fish on opener. I'm surprised you found crappies shallow. I went through that channel a number of times and it looked like the dead sea.

I'd imagine things will improve dramatically once we get that temp into the mid 40s.

Three of us fished Yellow all day Saturday & Sunday. We did manage our three walleyes each day, but it was tough. Five of the fish came between 5:30 pm & 8:30 pm & one fish at 8:00 am. Two came on raps four on jigs. All the fish were caught in 4 to 8 feet of water. One male & five females. All five females were spawned out. All six fish were packed full of two to three inch perch.

On the WI DNR Yellow Lake page it still has it listed as 1 walleye.

"Walleye bag limits have change based on Tribal declaration and harvest. The following bag limits and dates now apply:

05/04/2013 - 03/31/2014: bag limit of 1"

We fished more for crappies than walleye so I couldn't tell you where and how to get 'em. Crappie we were able to get a hold of in Jeffries kept 8. I'll be up in a Alumacraft navigator 175CS black and grey. What boat do you have Don ?
