I'm not as concerned about the walleye population out there as I am the muskies. Numbers there have greatly suffered since they cut the stocking numbers in half quite a few years ago. Back in the mid 90s, I loved fishing muskies out there. I don't expect any body of water to remain at its apparent peak as it was back then. But the change in the musky fishery since then has been pretty drastic, in my opinion.

It's my understanding that musky stocking was stopped because of a huge die-off one summer. They never really figured out why, and untill they do they don't believe stocking is a good idea.

Don,

I'm not sure what year that die off was, but I remember hearing about it. Maybe 6 to 8 years ago? 2006 was a down year for numbers of muskies that they stocked in there. I don't know if it had anything to do with the die off or if the fish just weren't available. But they haven't stopped stocking them. Here is the stocking data for Yellow per the WI DNR HSOforum.

Yellow Lake Stocking Data

Beginning in 1999, they significantly reduced the numbers of muskies they have been putting in the lake. Nothing has really changed during that time period as far as that is concerned.

Thanks for the article link. Wow. I hadn't realized that the lower bag limit was a DNR reaction to the bands intentions. Helps explain to me why you guys were so [PoorWordUsage] about it.

Can anyone offer up a history lesson for me on what the Indian spearing activity has been on Yellow in recent history? When and where do they do this, how much is the take, etc..?? I realize this year it may be more, but it doesn't sound like anyone has a handle on what exactly that means.

I can't find any official reports of harvest numbers by the lake. It seems like a guarded secret. They spear walleye soon after the ice goes out, which could be opening weekend this year. shocked

I don't know how much difference there has been from year to year on Yellow. 2009 has been the only year I have seen data on. And that year the tribal quota was 1089 walleyes and they took 344.

I hope for the sake of hook and anglers they don't even come close to there quota. As for the reports, I do believe we will see them. But is seems to me it always after they are done with there business. Hide Walleyes, hide.....

Man, a few hundred walleyes was what they took out in 2009. If its anything close to that, its not a big harvest considering all the guys taking their eater limits. I don't know how many guys do that but holy cow that's got to add up.... Hopefully the indian harvest, and the non-indian harvest slows down so we can get the numbers up again

cont....of course the eater limits are all smaller non producctive breeders, and the indians would take out whatever. A few big female hogs can make a difference. Of course, same can be said for guys taking big females out for their walls. I'm contradicting myself as I type......

I have been fishing Yellow for 20 years. I think the walleye fishing is as good now as it was 20 years ago. The crappie fishing has improved the last few years. Northern size has gotten smaller. Perch numbers and size way down. Sunnies seem to be doing good. I don't fish Muskies & bass to often, so couldn't tell you if any change.

a few years back after a muskie tourney there,a friend saw many dead floating muskies around the lake.these tourneys both walleye and muskie are also not helping the fishery.mortality rates need to be considered also

Anyone get after the crappies when the ice goes out? Is it usually pretty good? I've seen guys fishing the channel but I'm assuming they can be had in a lot of places. Looking forward to it....first spring on Yellow.

You will have to search for them, but there are some nice slabs in the lake.

The way things look I may leave the boat, rods and tackle at home and spend our 29th annual Wi opener on dry land, Air temps dont look like they will be much above 50 till the first week of may and until water hits 49 I wont waste my time for ONE walleye

I will still make the trek down but only because I laugh so hard,,, I get tears in my eyes when I hang with these guys ,,so catching fish is a bonus,,,the only question is will it be 4 guys and 2 boats or 5 guys and 3 boats,,,I do like fishing out of my boat alone cuz I can run 2 lines and catch twice the fish but with the ONE limit why bother running 2 lines ,,of course there is always pike and muskies to be caught and released
