so i have an oooolldddd flasher with a high speed transom mount style transducer. it detects the bottom on the ice, but im not sure if it can see fish, and it definatly cant see my jig. do puck style and high speed type transducers work the same? or do i need a new one?

I think most issues people have is cone angle and getting the ducer level enough to read. Because you unit is so old, you may have scratches on the bottom and or not as much power as it once did.. hence why you are not picking up your jig.

Did you manually turn the sensitivity up as high as you could?

The pucks work better. Having said that, I limped along with a rig like you describe - oooollldddd. I mounted the transducer on a 24" stick and sent it down the hole. This was a Humminbird LX100 - I think, can't remember, but it was the cheapest thing they made at the time. I could see pretty small jigs just fine, but the pixels were so large that it was hard seeing a bite.

Buy a Vex or Marcum if you can, its a whole new world.

oh you bet. as soon as i have the money ill buy a nice one.

ya i turned up the sensitivity as high as it would go. any suggestions for getting the transducer level? right now all i really do is just throw it in the hole and hope for the best.

A lot of times the high speed transducer need mounting on something, whereas the ice transducer is designed to free drop and automatically levels itself.

i see, maybe i should rig up some sort of stand

I took the transducer bracket and mounted it onto a piece of 1/4 inch aluminum tubing. I then bent the tubing to to get the tranducer horizontal, and at the other end I made a J shape so I could hook it onto the ice of the flasher itself. With a little 'fine tuning' I was able to get it level and work reasonably well. The trick though is to get that mess out of the hole before you try and pull a fish up cause if you don't it'll get tangled.

I used the graph from my boat for 7 years ice fishing and used the high speed ducer. You keep adjusting it in the water till you get the minimum depth. Most of the time I could only see my lure when I jigged and it came across as a fish icon with fish ID on. Normally I would know there were fish if the bottom started to get distorted or the depth would change from like 10.2 to 10 ft. It is not as good as a flasher but it was tons better then nothing.

I used an old setup like you're talking about, a Hummingbird 2000. I had the transducer mounted on a T stick made from pine 1X2. The transducer was on the bottom of the T and the top of the T straddled the hole. It showed the level where the fish were swimming through and the water depth. But other than that my Vexilar rules. I used that old setup for 15 years or more and it helped catch a lot of fish. One thing about the Hummingbird was if you put a little water on the ice it would read through the ice.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
